JOB SUMMARY
We are currently seeking a Social Science Researcher IV - Environmental Health Outcomes . Health Research and Environmental Health Senior Research Scientist. This position may be located in Columbus, OH, Crystal City, VA or remote location for telework.
Battelle's Health Research team, headquartered in Columbus, OH, supports government and commercial clients on a variety of public health research and application areas, such as environmental health, military health, health communications, healthcare quality, and program evaluation.
The Environmental Health Outcomes team provides technical, analytic, policy, and logistical support to a range of U.S. government clients, such as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the National Institutes of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. Agency for International Development, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
The primary functions of the Senior Research Scientist, Environmental Health will be to serve as a thought leader in helping to grow the environmental health outcomes portfolio, as well as to oversee and serve as technical subject matter expert and contributor to existing and future contract research projects. This includes identifying relevant funding opportunities, leading proposals for funding, and engaging with clients to build and maintain productive relationships, as well as managing projects once funded and contributing technical expertise to contract research projects.
Compensation will be based on qualifications and experience.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provides relevant thought leadership and subject matter expertise to a range of public health, environmental governance, sustainable development and pollution prevention projects
- Scopes, plans, and facilitates a variety of translational science activities, to include stakeholder engagement, consensus-based agenda setting, capacity building, decision support, and outreach and education activities
- Leads and participates in multiple assigned and self-initiated research projects with minimum supervision, meeting client expectations while remaining within time and budget constraints
- Plans, organizes, executes, analyzes, and otherwise performs technical work while also overseeing project resources, managing budgets, deliverables, tasking, reporting and other project management related activities for multiple projects at a time
- Monitors and reports on project commitments, obligations, expenditures, performance, and tracks other technical or financial metrics
- Prepares technical and financial information for briefings, presentations, and status reports for both internal and external stakeholders (e.g., senior management or clients)
- Oversees and performs highly complex assignments by compiling, analyzing or evaluating data, policies or other sources of information to inform evidence-based policy, regulatory decisions, technical solutions, or other relevant interventions
- Prepares technical reports and presentations that are clear, concise, technically accurate, and of highest professional quality
- Leads literature or policy reviews, environmental scans and other information gathering activities to inform programmatic needs
- Leads or provides technical advice, assistance, and review of technical input into contract proposals, internally facing research or feasibility projects, White Papers, and marketing collateral
- Leads or significantly contributes to the preparation and submission of manuscripts to peer reviewed journals, or gray and popular literature
- Manages stakeholder relationships through a collaborative workstyle, communicating and working closely with internal and external stakeholders, including stakeholders from diverse backgrounds
- Serves as a professional representative of the organization, liaising with clients, partners, and other internal and external stakeholders during routine business operations, supporting business development efforts, or presenting technical contributions and accomplishments to clients and professional networks
THE FOLLOWING IS REQUIRED
- Master's degree in public health, environmental sciences, environmental studies, environmental policy, environmental planning, international development, geography and/or a related field
- Eight+ years of professional experience with program/project management, public health or environmental research, studies, assessments or local, state, federal or international regulatory work
- Experience successfully working in contract research for a federal, state, or private entity
- Subject matter expertise in one or more of the following areas: air quality, climate change, solid waste management, marine litter, pollution prevention, natural resource management, environmental impact assessment, sustainable development, environmental governance
- Experience successfully scoping, planning and implementing stakeholder engagement, public participation, consensus-based decision-making, institutional capacity building or adult learning activities
- Experience working with one or more of the following federal agencies: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the National Institutes of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
- Experience writing winning funding proposals, conducting business development efforts, leading or contributing to strategic planning efforts, and/or growing program portfolios
- Experience successfully applying project management principles, including overseeing project performance, timelines, and budgets
- Experience with technical writing, including technical reports, workshop summaries,
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and ability to maintain effective working relationships with a broad range of technical staff, program managers, policy and decision makers, and end users
- Ability to foster collaboration and decision-making among governmental clients and other project partners or stakeholders
- Ability to work with stakeholders from diverse backgrounds, including experience working with international partners or stakeholders
- Willingness and ability to travel both domestically and internationally as needed, once it is appropriate and safe to do so
- US citizen
THE FOLLOWING IS DESIRED
- PhD in public health, environmental sciences, environmental studies, environmental policy, environmental planning, international development, geography and/or a related field
- Experience developing or improving decision-support tools for public health, environmental management, sustainability planning, or other related areas
- Understanding of state, federal, and international policies and treaties related to environmental management or pollution prevention
- Familiarity with adaptive management styles to successfully perform on projects under evolving situations and priorities, while minimizing risk to clients
- Familiarity with equity, environmental justice, and/or gender inclusion in public health and environmental management efforts
- Advanced verbal and written proficiency in at least one foreign language
