Job Description: We are currently seeking a Mid-Level Laboratory Chemist for an Environmental Lab in Raleigh, NC. The position involves the performance of laboratory testing and support in a mobile laboratory. The position will support an EPA response team and requires on-call support for emergency response actions. The associate performs Toxic Organic (TO) gas analysis, Volatile Organic Analysis (VOA), TVOA, Low-Level soil VOA, Medium-level soil VOA analysis, extract and analyzed Semi-VOA, Pesticide and PCBs from Environmental samples, analytical Data Entry into Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), and review of organic analytical data to ensure completeness and integrity of results. We will provide the ideal candidate with on-the-job training. We offer a collaborative environment with opportunities for learning and expanding knowledge and skills.

Salary Range: $65,000 to $75,000 DOE

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Conduct TO1, 2, 14, 14A, 15, 15A, 16, and 17 air analysis methods
  • TVOA, VOA, semi-VOA, low-level soil VOA, medium-level soil VOA analysis on Agilent GC/MS instruments
  • Conduct air monitoring for mercury, gases, metals, dust, aerosols, and radiation
  • Conduct air and soil gas sampling using passive diffusion samplers, sorbent tubes, Summa canisters, impingers, filters, and sampling trains
  • Perform vapor intrusion and indoor air sampling and analysis including sub-slab port installation/sampling
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and calibrate instruments
  • Prepare reagents, standards, and samples to be used in performing analyses
  • Demonstrate proper cleaning techniques for work area, instrumentation, and equipment
  • Interpret and evaluate data, create an Electronic Date Package (EDP), and upload results to Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) for a final report
  • Perform review on the analytical data to ensure completeness and integrity of results
  • Deploy, operate and manage telemetric wireless sensor communication system (e.g., VIPER), and/or AreaRAE Pro
  • Deploy and monitor meteorological monitoring system
  • Input data into modeling software and EPA approved dispersion models.
  • Perform sample disposal and laboratory hygiene in keeping with GLP practices
  • Perform peer review for organic data validation
  • Perform SOP review, internal audits, and corrective action when needed
  • Monitor work flow for incoming samples
  • Check pending survey of samples and schedule workload accordingly
  • Work independently on administrative and technical projects assigned by laboratory supervisors
  • Support general lab operations and functions, including monitoring and requesting supplies and materials to maintain lab supply inventory
  • Track inventory of supplies and reagents to ensure no interruption of work flow
  • Trend and Monitor key performance metrics as assigned by supervisors
  • Operate other instrumentation as trained
  • Assist with data validation
  • Assist other TechLaw offices for field work activity upon request

Required Qualifications: To be considered for this position you must have:
  • S. in Chemistry or B.S. in closely related discipline with 30 credit hours of chemistry
  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience
  • Must have a valid driver's license with a safe driving record (CDL a plus)
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Demonstrate excellent teamwork and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent computer skills and proficient with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Ability to work effectively with multiple disciplines
  • A solid background in analysis and interpretation of data
  • Good written and oral communication skills, organizational skills, documentation skills, and attention to detail are essential
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and changing environment
  • This position requires some travel for emergency response and periods of time where the chemist is on-call for ER work

Preferred Qualifications:
  • 5-8 years of experience in VOC analysis in air or water by GC/MS
  • Successful applicant will need to have good attention to detail and be able to document all sampling meticulously (training will be provided as to requirements)
  • Excellent cross-functional team leadership and participation skills
  • Knowledge of chemical families and compatibilities
  • Environmental training (e.g. 40 or 24 Hour HAZWOPER certification), familiarity with air monitoring/environmental sample collection devices and maintenance, data recording, and processing skills are desirable
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as a member of a team
  • Strong multi-tasking skills: Must be able to perform operations simultaneously and must be able to switch from task to task upon demand
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems, make repairs, and work independently

Physical Requirements:
  • Must have the ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. and work in all weather conditions
  • Must be able to work evenings and/or weekends if required
  • Must have the flexibility and ability to travel 25% of the time
  • Must be able to work standing for long periods
  • Must be able to work inside a chemical laboratory and handle chemicals all day
  • Must be able to wear all PPE (personal protective equipment)
  • Ability to follow standard operating procedures and perform basic mathematical calculations
