Program Manager, Dean's Special Projects

Job Description:

The Program Manager, Deanâ™s Special Projects, at the Brown School of Public Health (BSPH) joins a vibrant team to manage and execute projects aimed at addressing key ongoing and emerging problems in public health. Current topic areas on the Deanâ™s Special Projects team include pandemic preparedness and response, crisis communications and misinformation, health equity, climate change and health, and digital health. Â

Reporting to and working closely with the Senior Director of Content, Strategy and Public Affairs, the Program Manager takes the lead on operationalizing and executing diverse projects such as university-wide collaborations, policy and research reports, seminar series, handbooks, and research and evaluation initiatives. The Program manager will work with a diverse team and engage stakeholders across Brown university and beyond, in academia, industry and government.Â

Major Responsibilities:
  •  Major Responsibility:   Program Strategy and Execution  60 %

Works closely with School leadership to establish project vision and drive towards implementation. Takes the lead on key initiatives byidentifying execution steps, defining success metrics, determining audience, operationalizing deliverables, and working across a diverse team, to assure high quality outcomes. Designs and runs the project management process, including building and maintaining databases and tracking systems. Responsible for the daily management of projects, ensuring team members understand their deliverables and deadlines are met. Researches and drafts reports. Works closely with external partners across industries (i.e. policy makers, physicians, government officials, corporate executives) to advance initiatives. Analyzes data and prepares presentations of findings in support of programmatic strategy. Â Contributes to and makes critical technical and programmatic decisions. May supervise a research assistant.Â
  • Major Responsibility:  Grant writing and reporting   20%

Respond to grant funding opportunities. Draft grant proposals, manage the collation of relevant grant submission materials (budgets, letters of support, etc.), and ensure timely submission, following School processes. Prepare and draft progress reports to funders or stakeholders as needed.Â
  • 3.Major Responsibility:Â Event management and support 10%

Collaborates with the Senior Director of Content, Strategy, and Public Affairs to design public events that will promote and disseminate the work of the School. Work on event content, engage relevant speakers and stakeholders, plan outreach and publicity to the target audience, and oversee the event planning and logistics.
  • 4.Major Responsibility:   Program Finance   10%

Works with the Brown SPH finance team to create and manage program budgets. Tracks and records expenses to the relevant cost center(s), supports budget reporting as necessary.Â

The Program Manager would be free to make decisions related to matters including:Â
  • Outreach to a potential stakeholder or partner
  • Project execution details such as coordination approach and tools, agenda setting, next stepsÂ
  • Budget expenditures required to complete or accelerate a project
  • Determining metrics to track and report on project success

The position would advise others on:Â
  • Direction of individual research asksÂ
  • Execution of tasks such as research write ups, outreach emails, meeting materials preparationÂ
  • Publicity and promotion for public events

The Program Manager will oversee various projects for four to six different content areas. This position will participate in the planning of quarterly events; it may supervise one or two research assistants.

Job Qualifications and Competencies:

Bachelorâ™s degree or equivalent work experience. Three or more years of programmatic experience required, with progressive responsibility, preferably in higher education or public health settings. Proven experience managing projects to completion and producing timely and professional deliverables. The candidate should have a high capacity to multi-task and to meet competing deadlines. Strong attention to detail and follow-through. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a complex and diverse community. Demonstrated capacity to work both collaboratively and independently, to exercise sound judgment, to switch between leading an effort and contributing to another, and to handle sensitive matters. Ability to understand complex topics and communicate them well. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to translate goals into operations; able to identify needs and develop innovative proposals, programs, and projects. Demonstrated commitment to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.
