The Library Conservation Page position is located in the Library's special collections conservation lab, which supports NYPL's three research centers dedicated to the preservation and access of tens of millions of special collections including rare books, manuscripts, archives, photographs, works of art on paper, maps, music scores, and artifacts. The position provides the opportunity to be fully immersed in the work of the lab in line with current educational/learning objectives.

The Library Conservation Page contributes to the full work of the lab, conducting stabilization and full treatments, participating in rehousing projects and object preparation for exhibitions, and contributing to the continued development of the lab's overall workflows, assets, and capabilities.

This library page position is scheduled for 7 hours per week (one full day). Schedules are variable based on library needs and may be subject to change.

Reporting to the Senior Book Conservator, the Library Conservation Page will:
  • Conduct stabilization and full conservation treatments
  • Prepare objects for exhibitions and loans
  • Contribute to the continued development of the lab's overall workflows, assets, and capabilities
  • Provide additional support to the lab as necessary

  • Currently enrolled in a graduate conservation program
  • Demonstrated treatment experience in a library conservation lab
  • Membership in AIC

  • Has read and understands the AIC Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Practice
  • Knowledge of and facility with basic instruments and tools of a conservation lab
  • Knowledge and practice of safe laboratory hygiene
  • Complete facility with Microsoft Office and Google Suite applications
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively -- both orally and in writing

  • Experience with computerized mat cutter, ultrasonic and edge welders
  • Experience with CAD software

  • Be Helpful to patrons and colleagues

Conservation laboratory setting

  • Lifting up to 30 lbs
  • Working with machines (automated box cutter, computerized mat cutter, ultrasonic and edge polyester welders)
  • Work under fume or dust extraction equipment
  • Work at a workbench (as opposed to a desk)
  • Moving book carts

USD $15.00/Hr.
Minimum one full day (7 hours) per week; maximum two full days (two 7-hour days) per week within the duty hours Monday-Friday, 9 am - 5 pm.
