This position is key to making these links work. The Forest Scientist position manages day-to-day research operations at ONRC including: planning, writing, and implementing research studies associated with Proviso funding (T3 Watershed Experiment, Long-Term Ecosystem Productivity (LTEP), Swiss Needlecast, and social science and outreach). This person acts as the primary liaison with collaborating UW and other researchers, DNR foresters, students, and stakeholders, and supports the Director in decision-making and administrative duties. The Olympic National Resources Center has an outstanding opportunity for a Forest Scientist! RESPONSIBILITIES: Duties and Responsibilities: • Olympic Experimental State Forest (OESF): Represents ONRC within DNR's OESF program. Serves as co-editor on the Learning Forest newsletter (5%). • Personal research: Initiates and conducts research in line with current funding or research grants (25%). • Team research: Works with a wide range of principal investigators to implement research, collect and analyze data, present talks, and write research papers and general articles (20%) • Community Outreach: Gives field tours, organizes and manages volunteers, attends public meetings, and builds partnerships with key ONRC stakeholders, Peninsula tribal councils, City of Forks (10%). Lead Responsibilities: • Research coordination and oversight: facilitate collaboration with principal investigators for the T3 Watershed Experiment, Long-Term Ecosystem Productivity, and Ethnoforestry outreach and trials. Assist the Director in oversight of proviso-funded projects to balance UW, public land manager (DNR and US Forest Service), and collaborator interests (30%). Supervisory Responsibilities: • Supervises one or more field technicians; and ONRC undergraduate student interns indirectly through technicians (10%). Position Complexities • Applies social science-based engagement protocols to work with a wide range of stakeholders and citizen-science participants (outreach, learning-based collaboration, formal interviews); • Develops and applies government-to-government protocols with Peninsula tribes; • Performs work that involves conventional protocols for statistical analysis and map-making using common software packages for which there are precedents; and • Applies independent problem solving with occasional oversight. REQUIREMENTS: • Master's degree in Forestry, Environmental Sciences or related field; • One or more years of research experience; • Graduate-level courses in both social and environmental sciences; • Hands on experience with a wide variety of stakeholders (especially tribes); • Teaching experience with undergraduate students; • Experience conducting formal interviews; • Proficiency in statistics and spatial analyses and map-making using R and ArcGIS; • Knowledge of Olympic Peninsula forest tree and understory ecology and management; • Experience in analysis of forestry and environmental data. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. DESIRED EXPERIENCE • Doctoral degree in Forestry, Environmental Sciences or related field; • Knowledge of remote sensing with lidar; • Ability to effectively work with and communicate with diverse stakeholders; • Strong communication, writing, and organizational abilities. Other Conditions of Employment • The position is stationed at ONRC, in Forks, WA, but remote work is negotiable.
