What You Will Do
As a Deputy Division Leader within the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Environment, Safety, Health, Quality, Safeguards, and Security (ALDESHQSS), you will report to the Division Leader for Waste Management (WM-DO). You will support the Division Leader with the leadership, technical oversight, and management of hazardous/chemical, low-level radioactive, mixed low-level, New Mexico Special and Toxic Substances Control Act waste at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). You will support strategic planning and tactical execution in support of Directorate goals for business and operational excellence. Exceptional communication and customer service to sustain e?ective relationships with principal mission stakeholders is essential. Emphasis will be placed on developing a long-term strategy to ensure that the Division has sta?ng and funding resources to meet future programmatic mission needs. Other responsibilities include supporting the Division Leader in resource allocation, succession planning, mentoring, recruiting, and retaining qualified sta? and using fact-based decision making to anticipate and resolve environmental protection and compliance issues.
WM-DO has approximately 65 employees and is responsible for leadership in waste management to anticipate and manage waste risks in support of the LANL mission. This division works closely with LANL's Environmental Protection and Compliance Division to ensure that waste management practices at the Laboratory comply with Federal and State of New Mexico regulatory requirements as well as Department of Energy Orders.

Minimum Job Requirements:

- Ability to effectively communicate, interact, and work with internal customers and with Federal, State, and local agencies and the public.
- Record of effective technical and leadership that emphasizes organizational skills, strategic and tactical planning, team building, program development, project management, budget preparation, financial management and business plan development and employee development tools.
- Advanced knowledge and experience with federal and state waste management regulations and requirements, which may include the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, Hazardous and Solid Waste Amendments, Toxic Substances Control Act, Hazardous Materials Transportation Act, the Pollution Prevention Act, Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act, and the National Environmental Policy Act.
Desired Skills:
- Demonstrated experience in effective personnel management and mentoring;
- Demonstrated commitment to, and action in, promoting Laboratory objectives including; areas of integrated safety and security management (ISSM), quality, and workforce diversity, as well as demonstrated knowledge of Laboratory objectives and other statements of policy/practice/procedures.
- Advanced knowledge of working in a complex organizational structure; and
- Direct experience managing regulatory stakeholders, public stakeholders, and internal and external customers, and legal and contractual relationships.
Education: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 12 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
