Conducts microbiological testing on a wide variety of raw material, nutritional supplements, foods, cosmetics, and other related materials. Scientists are given a designation of I - V based on experience, job knowledge, and overall ability. Authorization of duties by a designated manager or Lab Director.

Essential Functions:
- Conducts microbiological testing on a wide variety of raw material, nutritional supplements, foods, cosmetics, and other related materials
- Familiar with FDA/BAM, USP, and AOAC microbiological approaches.
- Performs assays to enumerate various bacteria and fungi.
- Preparation of various growth media.
- Isolates and makes cultures of micro-organisms.
- Monitor, evaluate and adjust growth factors as needed to achieve accurate and precise results
- Read, document, and report test results.
- Assures proper collection and storage of specimens.
- Participates in quality assurance activities.
- Follows good laboratory practice (GLP). Complies with all safety regulations while working in the lab and handling hazardous materials.
- Participates in creating and updating written protocols and SOPs.
- Performs minor instrumentation maintenance.
- Support of and involvement in company, department, and/or safety policies, procedures, programs and activities.
- Maintain a clean and orderly work area.
- Other duties as assigned.
- BS in microbiology; Microbiological experience or graduate training preferred.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedures.
- Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts for data analysis. Familiarity with linear regression, distribution, and variance analysis.
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, or crouch; talk or hear; and taste or smell.
- The employee must exert up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, an/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include near acuity, far acuity, depth perception, accommodation, color vision and field of vision.
- May be exposed to toxic, caustic, or irritating chemicals/materials common in a laboratory environment.
