The position of Environmental Health & Safety Specialist intern is within our Cardiometabolic business unit located at Alere San Diego in San Diego, California.
This role is responsible for the day-to-day environmental, health, and safety (EHS) functions. The individual will work under the supervision of the Senior EHS Specialist to complete several target-specific projects. The individual will assist in the day-to-day activities of the department by coordinating and preparing reports, assisting with completing mandated corporate audits such as LOTO and machine guarding, and updating SDSs.
Individual may provide day to day management and oversight of at least two of the major EHS areas listed below:
- Occupational Safety and Health
- Hazardous Waste Management
- Medical Waste Management
- Electronic and Universal Waste Management
- Environmental Protection
- Air Pollution Prevention
- Water Pollution Prevention
- Fire protection and Building Codes
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Stays current with regulatory compliance issues by reviewing Federal, State, and Local environmental health and safety laws and regulations which may affect Alere's ability to manufacture or distribute products.
- Collects data to update the site's chemical inventory
- Reviews EHS policies and programs at least annually and makes change recommendations to reflect current laws and regulations.
- Performs ergonomic assessments.
- Performs equipment safety audits.
- Oversees the collection, storage and removal of Hazardous, Medical, Electronic and Universal wastes.
- Oversees Hazard Communication and material safety data sheet requirements by updating current SDSs
- Sets the example by practicing safety policies and procedures for all departments to follow.
- Understands and is aware of the quality consequences which may occur from the improper performance of their specific job; has awareness of device defects that may occur in their area of responsibility, including product design, verification and validation, manufacturing and testing activities
- Responsible for exhibiting professional behavior with both internal/external business associates that reflects positively on the company and is consistent with the company's policies and practices; build productive internal/external working relationships
- Carries out duties in compliance with established business policies
- Other duties as assigned, according to the changing needs of the business
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE YOU'LL BRING
Required
- Current enrollment in a BS degree in environmental health, occupational health with some experience in the environmental or occupational safety & health field.
- An Associate's degree in environmental health, occupational health, and four years of additional experience in the EHS field may substitute for a BS degree.
- Knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and DOT regulations.
