Creek Farm Education Program Coordinator
Society for the Protection of NH Forests
The Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests is a statewide land conservation organization that was founded in 1901 to protect New Hampshire's most important landscapes and promote wise use of its renewable natural resources. Today, with 9,400 member households and over 40 employees, the Forest Society owns 172 reservations in 102 communities across the state, and has interests and monitoring responsibilities for 818 conservation easements. With ongoing programs in advocacy, land protection and sustainable forest management, the Forest Society consistently ranks among the nation's top land trusts and has been a leader in setting the standard for American land protection.

The non-profit Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests seeks an experienced, enthusiastic, and motivated individual for the position of Creek Farm Education Program Coordinator. The successful candidate will have excellent oral communications skills including experience interacting with the public.

This is a part-time position based in Portsmouth, NH. The Creek Farm Education Program Coordinator is primarily responsible for the comprehensive design, development and delivery of outdoor education programs and partnerships at the Forest Society's 35-acre Creek Farm Reservation located at the mouth of Sagamore Creek on Little Harbor in Portsmouth, NH. The position requires evening and weekend work.

Position Summary:

The Creek Farm Education Program Coordinator is responsible for comprehensive design, development and delivery of indoor and outdoor education programs and on site partnerships at the Forest Society's 35-acre Creek Farm Reservation located at the mouth of Sagamore Creek on Little Harbor in Portsmouth, NH.

Increase public visitation and community participation in scheduled programs and special events covering a range of natural history or recreation-based topics for public audiences; including youth, families, schools, camps and adult education audiences.

Cultivate cooperative education program partnerships with allied organizations on site at Creek Farm and in the greater Portsmouth community. Expand breadth of program audience to wider Seacoast region and southern NH.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Represent Forest Society within Portsmouth's environmental, sustainability, recreation, fitness and arts communities. Establish a Forest Society Creek Farm focus on youth and families public nature-based education programming.

Cultivate new creative program partnerships resulting in a vibrant suite of public education programs at the Creek Farm campus.

Welcome public, lead trail walks and special events. Lead site interpretation planning.

Design and develop engaging education programs to include seasonal lectures, hikes, walks, tours, special events and community outreach.

Promote public visitation and enjoyment of Creek Farm outdoor campus. Track programs attendance. Help estimate site visitation.

Coordinate scheduling, promotion, delivery and management of Forest Society education programs. Manage education programs budget.

Coordinate shared calendar for Carriage House classroom and outdoor program space by on-site partners including staff for the Portsmouth-based Gundalow Company summer day camps and after-school programs.

Opportunity to develop and expand the digital content for mobile platform property tour. Establish interpretive "Tree ID" trail along existing Little Harbor Loop Trail. Create new interpretation for property features.

Expand cooperative programs with camps, schools, youth groups and community organizations. Foster and facilitate site use by partner organizations at Creek Farm campus including (but Gundalow Co, Portsmouth Paddle Company, Tinkergarten, Soulfire Yoga, more.

Assist with other Forest Society outreach education programs, hikes, tours and special events.

Other duties as assigned.

Contributions/Outcomes:

Successful outcomes are defined by development of innovative programs that increase visitation, foster wide community partnerships and engage new audiences within and outside the Seacoast region.

Design of education programs and foster partnerships will define and shape public perception of Creek Farm as a Forest Society recreation destination and outdoor learning resource
  • Attract people and partnerships to Creek Farm
  • Schedule tours and networking for invited community organizations
  • Help to develop interpretive content including trails, signage, and written materials working with Forest Society Reservation Stewardship team.
  • Promote Creek Farm as a destination for natural history education and recreation events (hiking, birdwatching, kayaking, picnics, group visits)
  • Schedule and lead tours, walks and special events.
  • Track visitation, programs attendance, budgets
  • Actively promote Creek Farm programs to wider audiences.

Qualifications and Skills Required:

The successful candidate will be personable, articulate, self-motivated, and enthusiastic while bringing a creative, visionary approach to development of Creek Farm as a Forest Society education program center.

Prior work experience developing and leading environmental education programs for youth, adult and family-oriented outdoor education programs. Interpretive program experience preferred.

Strong oral and written communication skills. Prior public speaking and public presentation experience preferred.

A natural resources background including familiarity with NH forests, wildlife, marine and estuarine ecosystems and ecology.

Community public relations, media relations and community networking experience preferred.

Strong organizational skills with a detail-oriented approach to tracking and measuring program outcomes.

Possess strong outdoor leadership and interpersonal skills to ensure successful field trip planning, leadership and safety. Recreation hiking and paddling experience is preferred .

Bachelor's degree or higher education graduate degree candidates preferred.

Driver's license and personal transportation required.

Established community network connections in Portsmouth and the greater Seacoast Region are helpful.

Certifications in CPR, ACR Basic First Aid preferred.

Work Conditions:

Includes frequent evening/weekend work during the busiest May through September season. Includes working outside in varying weather conditions.

Physical Requirements:

Physical ability to hike, paddle and carry backpack over rough terrain including rocky shoreline and wooded hiking trails. Backpack will contain supplies such as first aid kit, extra clothing layers, rain gear, water, and snacks for self, and could also include additional snacks and water for participants.
