Job Description:We are seeking a synthetic biologist with expertise in molecular biology, biosensor development, protein, and genetic circuit design, metabolic engineering, directed evolution, and omics-based analyses. You will report to the CTO and work closely with our management team as a leader in a growing R&D organization. The successful applicant will work as part of an interdisciplinary team of scientists, lead research projects in pursuit of novel small molecule therapeutics, and mentor junior staff.

Responsibilities:
  • Design and test functional genetic modules.
  • Design, test, and optimize metabolic pathways.
  • Develop and execute growth-coupled assays.
  • Optimize biochemical workflows for rigor, reproducibility, and throughput.
  • Prepare presentations and present data to both our internal team and external partners
  • Write Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and maintain a high-quality Electronic Laboratory Notebook (ELN).
  • Work on teams with diverse scientific backgrounds and foster a collaborative culture to conduct world-class science.

Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. or MS with 5 years of experience.
  • Hands-on experience with the design, optimization and use of functional genetic modules, metabolic engineering, and growth-coupled assays is required.
  • Adaptability and flexibility to work in a dynamic startup environment.
  • Strong collaboration skills (verbal and written communication, organization, teamwork, and creativity).

Preferred:
  • Industrial experience in synthetic biology and/or pharmaceutical R&D.
  • Experience with the characterization of fermentation products (GCMS, LCMS, HPLC, NMR, etc), with the chromatographic purification of small molecules, and with laboratory automation.
  • Experience starting and managing lab operations.
  • Experience with preclinical R&D for small molecule candidate therapeutics and a familiarity with the broader drug discovery process (e.g., biology, pharmacology, toxicity, and industry trends).
