The Department of Neuroscience in conjunction with the center for Brain Immunology and Glia (BIG) at the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Medicine invites applications for two tenure-track or tenured open-rank faculty positions. The Department of Neuroscience currently houses research groups that study a variety of neurodegenerative disease processes ranging from Alzheimer's disease to hearing loss. Researchers in the Department approach these topics from various vantage points but have a particular interest in the role of glia and immune processes in disease etiology. This strength is also reflected in the BIG center which draws together researchers from across the University. Building on the existing strengths in Glial Biology, Neuroimmunology, and Neurodegeneration we wish to expand in the following research areas: astrocyte biology, brain-immune interactions, glia-neuronal interactions, neurodegenerative disease, neurovascular unit, blood-brain barrier, and the gut-brain axis.
Successful applicants will have earned a PhD, MD, or MD/PhD, completed a minimum of three years of postdoctoral training, and demonstrated a track record of successful research with a strong potential of developing innovative research programs that can attract sustained extramural funding. Tenure status and rank of the position depends on qualifications. They will join a collaborative, inclusive, and dynamic group of investigators with similar research interests. Prospective faculty members can draw from an outstanding and diverse pool of graduate and MD/PhD students in Neuroscience, Neuroimmunology, and the interdisciplinary Biomedical Sciences (BIMS) program to support their research program. Applicants will also enjoy access to unique shared research facilities in the Department which include high-resolution single- and multi-photon confocal and light sheet microscopy, flow cytometry, and behavioral equipment.
The University of Virginia is located in Charlottesville, Virginia, which boasts abundant recreational activities and easy access to the Blue Ridge Mountains, the eastern shore and the nation's capital. The Department of Neuroscience expects to recruit two new faculty members this year, and an additional two next year, with the majority being recruited at the tenure track Assistant Professor level. However, well-qualified mid-career applicants with a funded research program are also encouraged to apply. Competitive salary, space, and start-up packages will be provided.
A commitment to and evidence of an explicit commitment to diversity and of advancing understanding and outcomes for underrepresented groups are essential. Candidates must have a record of excellence in research, as appropriate for the candidate's rank. Appointment with tenure requires documented excellence in research and teaching, and an emerging national reputation. Applicants with a respect for diversity and a passion for making a positive impact on the world in a collaborative environment are strongly encouraged to apply.
Priority application review will begin April 2, 2021, but the positions will remain open until filled.
