The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Scientist/Engineer for Sustainable Products builds LCA models and helps formulate fiber-based alternatives to replace plastics and assess the resulting sustainability impacts of switching to paper. This role is a key focus area for WestRock in the development and commercialization of new products.
The successful candidate has prior experience in working with customers and internal technical teams to uncover sustainability requirements develop sustainable packaging solutions using Life Cycle Assessment and other tools to assess environmental impacts. The candidate has good knowledge of packaging sustainability issues, product formulations and LCA techniques and tools.
LCA Scientist/Engineer - Core Competencies and Responsibilities
- Demonstrated interest and background in sustainable packaging and options to replace plastics with fiber-based solutions.
- Knowledgeable on different types of materials which are used in Food, Foodservice and Beverage packaging applications.
- Strong interest and understanding of recyclability and composability requirements in Food, Foodservice and Beverage end markets.
- Understands the basics of packaging requirements and has prior experience in a range of packaging materials (papers, plastics, coatings, etc).
- Familiarity with a wide range of data sources relevant for environmental and policy analysis, and the ability to identify and engage experts to conduct research. Capable of identifying key features of complex systems/processes.
- Build LCA models from scratch and run comparative environmental impact of various packaging materials in terms of total CO2 etc.
- Collaborate internally and guide manufacturing teams and suppliers through data collection required for LCA modeling
- Write technical reports. Also, present complex information so that it is understandable to a non-technical audience.
- Develop process simulation of papermaking and packaging processes using material and energy balance software
- Proven ability to manage complex information, make simplifying assumptions when needed, and convey findings in easily understood ways.
- Collaborate with internal and external customers to develop and assess new products.
- Build credibility and relationships with technical development teams.
What you need to succeed :
- MS or PhD in Engineering or advanced degree in similar technical field. Bachelors would be considered if individual has requisite experience.
- A minimum of 2 years' experience in LCA modeling relevant to climate change impacts and benefits (PhD work in this area would be considered acceptable)
- Understanding of plastics and paper used in packaging applications for Food, Foodservice and Beverage
- A demonstrable knowledge of how packaging materials are made and the corresponding environmental implications would be preferred.
- Familiarity with LCA databases and in-depth knowledge of database management
- Familiarity with LCA standards & guidelines (e.g., ISO 14040/44)
- Strong computer skills relevant for data manipulation and analysis as well as experience with SimaPro or other LCA software, Excel, PowerPoint, Python, or Matlab strongly preferred.
