Job Description
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is a world-class research institution powered by a highly educated, diverse workforce committed to collaboration and work-life balance. The Subsurface Process Science Team within the Subsurface Science & Technology Group seeks a S&E1 in Environmental Science for conducting laboratory research in microbiology, geochemistry, and environmental engineering as related to environmental characterization and remediation.
As an S&E1 in the Subsurface Science and Technology group, you will join a talented, multi-disciplinary team that seeks to understand and predict subsurface processes in response to natural and engineered inputs.
Work Scope:
Candidate will conduct laboratory and field research in geochemistry, microbiology, geophysics as related to environmental characterization, remediation, and monitoring. The effort would contribute to several projects, including: (i) the Deep Vadose Zone Applied Field Research Initiative; (ii) DOE, Office of River Protection support research on glass corrosion; and (iii) Department of Energy Basic Energy Science Energy Frontier Research Center program focused on understanding chemical reaction mechanisms in caustic solutions of relevance to radioactive tank waste. The candidate will be expected to partner with other researchers to address complex problems in a multi-investigator team setting.
- Key responsibilities will be to design and perform laboratory experiments including test plan development; setup; executing experimental procedures; data collection, recording, tabulating, and reporting; and waste disposition. Specifically, the candidate will:
- Conduct independent research and work on team assignments.
- Prepare culture media, chemical solutions and standards; calibrate meters and probes; and perform batch and column tests.
- Analyze samples using various benchtop instrumentation such as spectrophotometers, total organic carbon analyzer, and microscopes.
- Record qualitative and quantitative observations.
- Follow all laboratory safety protocols and dispose of waste materials in accordance with applicable permits and processes.
- Contribute to technical reports and peer-reviewed manuscripts
- Interact, communicate, and problem solve with a diverse team of research staff across PNNL.
- Present research at team meetings, project/program review meetings, and international conferences.
Minimum Qualifications
- BS/BA with 0-1 years of experience
- MS/MA with 0 years of experience
Preferred Qualifications
- MS/MA degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or any geoscience related field.
- Experience in a research laboratory environment.
- Experience performing geochemical modeling using The Geochemist's Workbench® software
