The Genomics Research Center (GRC) is a center of excellence for genetics and genomics that supports both Discovery and Development. The GRC goal is to develop world class genetics and genomics research focused on finding the right targets and helping AbbVie scientists better understand not only human disease biology but also the behavior of and response to our drugs in clinical trials across all therapeutic areas.
Functional Genomics within the GRC provides expertise in genome editing and CRISPR technology to discover and validate novel drug targets for Immunology, Oncology and Neuroscience discovery pipelines. We utilize cutting edge genomic techniques to transform human genetics data into drug targets and to identify pathogenetic mechanisms. We apply high-throughput functional genomic screening approaches to in vitro and in vivo preclinical models with diverse molecular and phenotypic readouts. We perform hypothesis-driven research for target validation and execute mechanistic studies utilizing a variety of genomic and non-genomic tools in primary and in vitro cell culture systems. We have an exciting opportunity for a scientist, to be located at AbbVie Headquarter Lake County Campus in North Chicago, IL, to join our collaborative team of geneticists, molecular and cellular biologists, and computational biologists. The level is commensurate with experience.
Responsibilities:
- Independently design, execute, and interpret critical experiments to answer scientific questions.
- Generate and test hypothesis by designing, performing, and interpreting laboratory-based experiments. Read literature critically and analyze genomic data to support these activities.
- Develop in vitro and in vivo screening assays in collaboration with therapeutic area scientists by generating cell lines, developing lentiviral and RNP delivery methods, and integrating and optimizing screening protocols.
- Perform pooled and arrayed CRISPR screens with FACS-based molecular and functional assays on immortalized cell lines, primary cells, and iPSC-derived cells.
- Work closely with NGS and bioinformatics scientists to process genomic samples, analyze screening results, and generate screening hits for follow-up studies.
- Investigate novel screening hits in the context of disease biology by generating and testing hypothesis using a variety of biochemical, molecular, cellular, and genomic assays.
- Map candidate genes to known disease genetic networks through experimental and bioinformatic approaches.
- Learn, understand, and master new experimental techniques, and act as a resource or mentor for others.
- Collaborate and communicate with cross-functional scientists on experimental designs and results and scientific goals.
- Report research progress to management on a regular basis, provide project updates to cross-functional project teams, and provide scientific presentations to department and other internal scientific forums.
- Seek and advance opportunities to present research results at external scientific conferences and publish high-impact articles in peer-reviewed journals.
Qualifications
Position will be hired based on level of education & years of experience.
- Bachelors, Masters, or PhD in virology, immunology, immune-oncology, or cell & molecular biology, or in a related discipline with 7-10+ (BS), 5-8+ (MS) or 0-4+ (PhD) years of relevant research experience in industry or academia.
- Demonstrated expertise in molecular characterization of disease modifier genes using functional genomics is preferred.
- Extensive laboratory research experience in cell-based functional assay development is required. Experience in transfection, lentiviral transduction, flow cytometry, next-generation sequencing, and genetic editing with CRISPR is desired.
- Strong skills in molecular analytic methods including DNA/RNA isolation, PCR/qPCR, molecular cloning, genotyping, and western blot will be favorably considered.
- Basic conceptual understanding of broad genomic technologies such as next-generation sequencing, RNA-seq, RNAi (shRNA/siRNA), and CRISPR gene editing is required.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills are required. Evidence of previous successful collaborations will be highly valued. Ability to work independently as well as in a team is a must.
- Ability to learn new skills and apply them in a fast-paced research environment is a must.
- Demonstrated creativity, problem-solving skills, and attention to details are required.
