The Frederick National Laboratory is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc. The lab addresses some of the most urgent and intractable problems in the biomedical sciences in cancer and AIDS, drug development and first-in-human clinical trials, applications of nanotechnology in medicine, and rapid response to emerging threats of infectious diseases.

Position Overview:

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The VISL is a dedicated support lab for clinical trials conducted at the NIAID's 8 th floor clinic and its collaborators. We perform serologic and molecular testing to monitor treatment and natural history trials for HIV, SARS-CoV-2, Influenza, and other new and reemerging pathogens.

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Work closely with lab staff to organize and manage the genotyping unit
  • Analyze genotyping data including variant interpretation
  • Automate and improve current genotyping procedures
  • Develop new procedures for new and reemerging pathogens
  • Oversee and improve various automated scripts for VISL assays to support the lab team

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:
  • Possession of a PhD degree from an accredited college or university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency
  • In addition to the education requirement, a minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible experience
  • Minimum 5 years experience with NGS sequencing on the Illumina MiSeq instrument
  • Familiarity with the Oxford Nanopore system
  • Strong background in bioinformatics and analysis of sequence data including assay QC
  • Familiar with CLIA regulations surrounding the performance of molecular assays
  • Ability to independently design new SOPs for sequence detection of newly emerged pathogens
  • Excellent organizational, Communication (verbal and written) and time management skills
  • Self-motivated, high level of initiative
  • Team player who can empower and encourage lab members and provide constructive feedback
  • Ability to collaborate with colleagues in a creative, idea-sharing manner and approach problem-solving in a positive way
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:
  • Experience with working in a BSL2* laboratory
  • Experience working with human pathogenic viruses
  • Experience with Tecan robots
  • Previous experience working under CLIA regulations
