Job Summary:
We are seeking a motivated, hands-on, team player to serve to two critical roles in the Biology department:

To serve as the laboratory coordinator for the lower division biology lab sections.

To provide general laboratory support for instructional labs at USF.

About 50% of total work time will be spent on each of these two roles. The Instructional Laboratory Coordinator is expected to work closely with the Faculty Coordinator and Lecture Professors for the lower division lab courses.

The Instructional Laboratory Coordinator reports to the Director of Technical Staff and Instrumentation Specialist.
Full Job Description:

Biology lower division lab coordinator duties:
  • Create a detailed materials list and place orders for lab exercises at the beginning of each semester as needed, adhering to the University procurement policies.
  • Work with the Faculty Coordinator to schedule regular weekly meetings with laboratory instructors.
  • Prepare for, set up, and take down weekly laboratories, including disposing of biohazardous waste and dissection waste.
  • Go over lab exercises for the following week with laboratory instructors.
  • Regularly communicate with lab instructors about any changes to lab exercises, supplies, issues with lab, etc.
  • Train and supervise student workers to assist in duties outlined above.

General Laboratory Support duties:
  • Prepare for, set up, and take down weekly laboratories for various courses during academic year and in summer session as needed.
  • Oversee organization of various teaching laboratories and prep rooms, including routine cleaning.
  • Maintain an inventory of chemicals, general supplies, specimens, models, cultures, laboratory equipment, microscopes, etc. used in teaching laboratories.
  • Operation of autoclaves plus monthly spore testing and record keeping.
  • Coordinate submission of purchase requisitions for laboratory supplies across lab sections.
  • Oversee organization of various teaching laboratories and prep rooms, including routine cleaning.
  • Aid in basic maintenance and repair of laboratory equipment and instrumentation and report any unresolvable issues to Instrument Specialists.
  • Train and supervise student workers to assist in duties outlined above.
  • Cross train with the Lab Manager to help cover each other's essentials duties during any absences.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Knowledge of and skill in independent preparation of laboratory reagents and solutions.
  • Expertise in chemical and biological laboratory techniques.
  • Competence in college level mathematics.
  • Knowledge of and skill in operating lab instruments and scientific equipment.
  • Training, knowledge, and skill in minor repairs, adjusting, and maintaining instruments including but not limited to spectrophotometers, incubators, balances, and especially microscopes.
  • Help create SOPs for any equipment used in labs and store on departments Google Team drive.
  • Knowledge of lab safety procedures and ensuring student workers adhere to these.
  • Skill with computers; including file handling, databases, spreadsheets, and word processing software.
  • Become knowledgeable with Workday (HR software) for hiring student workers and tracking their hours, Hilltop Shop (USF Procurement system) for ordering all equipment and supplies, and Canvas, the web-based learning management system used at USF.
  • Ability to work well with and coordinate requests from students, faculty, and staff in a timely and professional manner.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree required; two years lab-related work experience recommended
  • Must have valid California state driver's license
  • Must be able to carry and lift 50 lbs from floor to lab table
  • Experience in academic settings preferred
