ABOUT POET BIOREFINING

Our 33 biorefining facilities produce 3 billion gallons of bioethanol, 14 billion pounds of Dakota Gold distillers grain animal feed and nearly 1 billion pounds of our Voila corn oil. That's a lot of product! We also provide plant-based products like CO2 for the food and beverage industry and purified alcohol for use in products ranging from food and beverage ingredients and personal care products to cleaning supplies, hand sanitizer and industrial bioethanol. POET also produces JIVE, a product that contributes to more sustainable roadways by using plant-based ingredients to help recycle old asphalt. We also buy over 930 million bushels of corn per year from local producers. It is our role at POET Biorefining to ensure safe, efficient, and profitable operations at each facility.

JOB SUMMARY

The Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) Manager is a leader for their site location and a resource amongst the EH&S teams across POET Bioprocessing locations. This role is critical for setting the tone for environmental, health and safety culture.

DURING A TYPICAL DAY (IF THERE IS ONE):

  • Ensure written safety programs are reviewed and kept current and communicate changes to team members.
  • Remain up to date on new safety-related regulations, safety equipment and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Facilitate regular regional training to enhance the capabilities of other local POET Biorefinery EH&S team members.
  • Lead safety training sessions for a variety of people including new and existing team members and contractors.
  • Collect data, manage record retention of the EH&S management systems and maintain training records.
  • Responsible for maintaining and complying with the required elements of the Process Safety Management program and site specific safety
  • Generate, review, and submit daily, weekly, monthly and annual safety and environmental
  • Lead and direct safety and environmental audits. Document completion of corrective actions
  • Responsible for the 3rd Party Vendor and Contractor Management software. Also responsible for contractor waiver management for the
  • Serve as the local expert for environmental compliance issues, including a thorough understanding of the facility's environmental permits, hazardous waste management, SWPPP, RMP, SPCC, and other applicable state and federal regulatory requirements. Maintain permit required recordkeeping for a variety of environmental
  • Lead and/or participate in team root cause analysis of environmental, health and safety concerns.
  • Assist with Workers' Compensation claims and reporting upon request. Lead the first report of injury and/or work with a third party triage service.
  • Assist with managing the list of recommendations generated during third party visits and audits (FM Global, Nationwide, etc.).
  • Champion Safety, Health, and Environmental at the facility, utilizing influential leadership skills to drive and improve the facility culture of safe behavior and environmental compliance.
  • Participate with company-wide initiatives in the development of standard programs and implement the developed programs locally.
  • Coordinate regular calls with other local POET Biorefinery EH&S team members to promote sharing of best practices and identify and communicate opportunities that may impact all of POET appropriately.
  • Function as a liaison between POET and government agencies.

STRENGTHS OF A SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE

  • Associates or Bachelor's degree in a safety or environmental field or 8+ years of experience in EH&S work required.
  • Construction safety experience is beneficial.
  • Demonstrated influential leadership skills that have shifted culture of facilities, related to EH&S views.
  • Required certifications: National Safety Council's Advanced Safety Certificate and National Registry of Environmental Professionals Certified Environmental and Safety Compliance Officer Certificate. Higher level certifications can be substituted, these include Associate Safety Professional, Certified Safety Professional, or Professional Engineer.
  • Completed professional development; OSHA General Industry 30-Hour, DOT Hazmat Transportation, OSHA Construction 10-hour, 24 hour HAZWOPER, and HAZWOPER Train-The-Trainer; or equivalent courses. You know how to engage an audience, no matter the size, while presenting and training on important environmental and safety related topics.
  • Workers' Compensation administration experience preferred.
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and communication skills as well as the ability to embrace change.
  • Communicate effectively in writing and in person.
  • Have the ability to understand technical and day to day operations of a bioprocessing facility.
  • Know the basics of Microsoft Office Suite. You're capable of learning new programs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Occasional travel will be part of the norm for this position to visit the bioprocessing facilities, meetings and site visits. At times overnight travel may be required.
