Biological Science Laboratory Technician

The International Pacific Halibut Commission (IPHC) is seeking a full-time Biological Science Laboratory Technician for a three-year appointment to support research projects conducted by the Biological and Ecosystem Science Branch.

The IPHC is an international organization established by a convention between Canada and the United States of America, providing research and stock management of Pacific halibut, with offices in Seattle, Washington, USA.

Principal Duties

The Biological Science Laboratory Technician is responsible for the operation and management of the Biological and Ecosystem Science laboratory and for assisting in IPHC research projects investigating Pacific halibut population genomics, reproduction, growth and discard survival. Specific duties include:
  • Processing and analyzing biological samples from Pacific halibut resulting from IPHC research activities.
  • Establishing technical and analytical protocols, preparing technical reports, and assisting with and/or authoring scientific and technical reports and peer-reviewed papers.
  • Managing the Biological and Ecosystem Science laboratory, involving ordering of supplies and laboratory equipment, and creating and maintaining an inventory of biological samples, laboratory supplies and equipment. Ensuring proper operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • Training existing staff members to conduct specific techniques as needed.
  • Participating in the collection of biological samples in the field as needed.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

Education. Bachelor's degree (Master's preferred) in relevant scientific discipline (e.g. marine biology, fisheries, fish physiology, fish genetics, zoology, environmental science, etc.).

Professional experience. At least two years of specialized experience performing technical work in all techniques listed below:
  • DNA purification and genotyping techniques.
  • Molecular gene expression analyses (e.g. RNA purification, cDNA synthesis, conventional and quantitative real-time PCR, RNAseq) and genotyping techniques.
  • Use of bioinformatics applications for PCR primer design, quantitative real-time PCR data analyses and transcriptome sequence analyses.
  • Determinations of blood and tissue hormone and metabolite levels (ELISA and colorimetric techniques).

This position requires knowledge of computer functions related to data input and retrieval, and routine analysis of data is required. Report-writing skills are desired.

Salary and Benefits

The annual salary for this position is equivalent to an IPHC-GS-10 level for the Seattle Locality -- which ranges from $65,417 to $92,121 (2021 rates), depending on qualifications, experience and demonstrated skills relevant to the position.
