AECOM is seeking a part-time variable Wildlife Biologist to be based in our San Diego or Orange, CA office.

Position entails field monitoring of nesting sensitive avian species. Experience required monitoring nesting birds, specifically least tern and western snowy plover preferred. Experience conducting presence-absence surveys for federally and state listed avian species. Other types of wildlife field surveys, such as the quino checkerspot butterfly, and associated reporting may also be required.

Position responsibilities include but aren't limited to the following:
  • Performs standard scientific work requiring application of techniques and procedures.
  • Detects problems when using standardized procedures because of the condition of sample, difficulties with the equipment, etc.
  • Conducts specific phases of projects for more experienced scientists.
  • Proposes appropriate analytical methods and techniques. Assists in providing advice and consulting services within scope of scientific knowledge.
  • Draws conclusions and makes recommendations based on analysis.
  • Interprets and records data, conducts analyses, compares findings to relevant studies and local, state and federal regulations to ensure compliance.
  • Works under general supervision.

Minimum Requirements
  • BS/BA in biology or related field + 2 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience monitoring avian nesting species.
  • Ability to thrive in large team setting and independently.
  • Ability to work in remote, rugged terrain throughout southern California.
  • Valid U.S. driver's license
  • Experience monitoring nesting least terns, western snowy plovers, and/or light-footed Ridgway's rail.
  • USFWS 10(a)(1)(A) permit for listed species surveys.
  • Excellent writing skills.
  • Familiarity with botanical species of southern California.
