Position Summary

Odyssey Systems has an exciting new opportunity for a Research Scientist IV (Computational Biologist/Senior Bioinformatics Scientist) supporting the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) Medical Readiness Systems Biology (MRSB) Research Program, located in Silver Spring, MD. The program is focused on research and development of solutions that address capability gaps existing at all levels of care, and the goal is to develop and transition knowledge and materiel solutions to improve survival and recovery from diseases of Military relevance. Research is performed using multi-omics platform, bioinformatics, statistics, software, and web applications perform analyses in order to convert knowledge to discovery. MRSB currently applies its core competencies into several areas of interest including PTSD and comorbidities, coagulopathy, brain injury, musculoskeletal atrophy, space biology, pain management, infectious diseases, sepsis, toxicology, radiobiology and many more. Newly funded research will expand the laboratories capabilities by including studies on thermal injury, burn pits, malaria biomarkers, and polytrauma.

MRSB is a disease-agnostic program that utilizes high-throughput, multi-omics platforms supported by a suite of cutting edge, targeted assay tools and Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven analytical capabilities to identify diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers that generate a knowledge base about biological mechanisms and personalized care. MRSB is committed to developing a seamless, integrative module enabling to interrogate genome-to-phenome landscape to inform medical interventions and develop products to improve Warfighter health, performance, resilience, and readiness.

Responsibilities

Duties include, but not limited to:

Design, build, and implement computational tools and databases to support MRSB research activities.
Support research teams using state of the art computational analysis approaches.
When necessary, develop new bioinformatics resources applied to large datasets including nucleic acid sequence analysis, microarray, and NGS data analysis.
Collaborate with scientists to design, analyze and interpret biological experiments.
Ensure Program Managers have access to critical data, including real time and point-in-time reporting.
Prepare written reports and presentations for internal use as well as presentations at conferences.
Educate and train peers.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

PhD in the biological sciences or advanced degree in computer science/mathematics
Ability to plan and execute tasks following specified timelines.
Experience with laboratory management budget/financial tracking
Ability to manage personnel with demonstrated inter-personnel skills and ability to coordinate with multiple departments.

Preferred Qualifications:

MS or PhD in life sciences discipline
At least five years of experience in a DoD research environment

Additional Information:

Must be a US citizen with the ability to obtain a favorable NACLC T3 security investigation prior to start date.
