Job Description
Our Company's Neuroscience division is seeking a dynamic, risk-taking and team-oriented scientific leader for our Cambridge-based neuroimmunology early discovery research team that will explore the essential role of microglia cells in defining the risk for CNS diseases of highest unmet need such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and ALS. The successful candidate will join us to grow a cross-functional team of talented scientists and drive the discovery of novel insights into innate immune biology with the objective to define and validate new therapeutic strategies to impact neurodegenerative diseases. Expertise in molecular and cellular neuroscience, neuroimmunology, pharmacology and a passion for translating basic science to therapeutics are required, coupled with a publication record reflective of scientific excellence. Demonstrated success in discovering, validating and progression of a pipeline of novel target concepts through data driven decision making are key attributes for this position. You will develop research strategies and priorities with your colleagues as a positive and authentic motivator and mentor with an ability to collaborate both within and outward of our Research & Development Division.
This position will oversee the generation and integration of multi-modal datasets using technologies such as single cell sequencing approaches, spatial transcriptomics, proteomics and lipidomics which will require a strong working knowledge of systems biology approaches. The successful candidate will have strong experimental design and execution skills and must be willing to apply them as part of the team. This position will be located at our Company's growing Cambridge-based research facility that is adjacent to Kendall square. The Neuroimmunology lab will be integrated with colleagues in Chemical Biology, Genome and Biomarker Sciences, Oncology, Cardiometabolic diseases, Immunology, and our Exploratory Science Center as well as Neuroscience colleagues in Boston, London and West Point, PA.
Responsibilities include:
- Conceptualizing and implementing an end-to-end research strategy with flexibility to rapidly adapt using data driven decision making
- Being able to Integrate both in vitro and in vivo strategies
- Managing multiple direct reports via positive motivation through clear and transparent communication and mentorship
- Be a clear and fluid communicator of strategy and data to teams and stakeholders in written and oral form.
- Monitor, review and critically interpret published literature to guide strategy
- Be willing and able to engage hands-on with team members to develop, execute and troubleshoot experimental strategies
- Proactively engage with members from diverse functional areas and global Neuroscience at Merck as well as develop external collaborations with academic and biotechnology partners that meaningfully amplify questions asked and capabilities applied.
Required Education :
- PhD or MD/PhD preferably in Neuroscience, Pharmacology or Biochemistry or a related subject area with a minimum of 6 years of experience in industry, academia or biotechnology
