About the University of Redlands

Founded in 1907, the University of Redlands is a private university headquartered in Redlands, California. The university's main, residential campus is situated on 160 acres near downtown Redlands. An additional seven regional locations throughout California largely provide programs for working adults.

The School of Business has been providing graduate and undergraduate degrees to California professionals for over 40 years and currently has approximately 1,200 students in the MBA, MSOL, MSBA graduate programs, and an undergraduate BS (degree completion) program.

The campus locations include the Redlands campus as well as Burbank, Temecula, Rancho Cucamonga, Riverside, San Diego, Orange County, and Marin campuses. Programs are designed to offer practical, real-world insights into the issues that are shaping the modern business sector. On-ground and hybrid classes meet in the evening, once or twice weekly, and sometimes on Saturdays.

Mission, Vision, & Values

The refined School of Business mission is to "empower professionals to positively impact business and society". In its vision, the School of Business aspires to be highly distinctive as a business school because of its commitment to 21st century business skills and their use for professional, organizational, and societal advancement. These skills are the ability to be: integrative, analytical, spatial, ethical, collaborative, persuasive, entrepreneurial, societal, environmental, and global. The School of Business values academic excellence grounded in a liberal arts tradition; creation of a welcoming and inclusive community committed to student success; integrative and personalized education experiences; innovative, creative, and distinctive programs; and the interconnectedness of economic, social, and environmental sustainability.

School of Business Strategic Plan

The School of Business Strategic Plan is a directional guide for the academic years 2018 to 2023. The plan articulates a refreshed mission and vision and solidifies forward‚Äźfacing values for the School. Five key strategic initiatives guide the School towards the fulfillment of its mission, vision, and values statements, all of which align synergistically with both North Star 2020 (the University's institutional plan) and standards set forth by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). Within that overall alignment, the School of Business Strategic Plan captures the qualities that distinguish the School from its competitors, most notably an invigorated focus on 21st Century Business Skills. Implementation of the five strategic initiatives will be closely tracked and resourced appropriately. Anticipated outcomes include measurable student learning and application of 21st century business skills, enhanced enrollment growth through renewed and new academic degree offerings, heightened pathway participation by community colleges and corporations, improvements in the competitive infrastructure and growth in financial resources to support the quality and growth priorities of the school. Taken together these initiatives represent the School's "21st Century Excellence Plan" for the next five years.

Business & Society
While there has been a longstanding understanding of the role of businesses in society, there is heightened attention to this dynamic in light of trends and events over the last several years. This change was recognized in Fall 2019 when the Business Roundtable released a revised purpose of the corporation, supported by the country's top CEOs, calling for broader social, economic, and environmental community responsibilities. These responsibilities have moved further to the fore due to climate change impacts, social and racial tensions, and a massive health pandemic.

As discussed at the recent SB Redlands Business Day Forum on "Managing in Changing Times," these pressures and dynamics will not only affect how businesses are managed and led but have consequent implications for business education. These changes transcend courses or topics on "Corporate Social Responsibility" to include broader considerations across all business education dimensions. The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) captured this sentiment in their new 2020 collective vision for business schools.

"This is a vision for a future where business schools are drivers of change. Where business schools change the narrative about the role of business education, and of business, in society. Where business schools respond to the world's demands to be more inventive. More daring. More connected. More agile. And even more impactful." AACSB, 2020

The University of Redlands has a long history of embracing this broad view of business in society. Such a theme is also woven throughout CAS business education, which has featured classes on sustainable business, business ethics, global business development, applied ethics, non-profit management, and economics and society. The School of Business has offered similar programs, and formally embraced "Business & Society" (B&S) in the 2018 SB Strategic Plan that declared the mission of the school is to "empower professionals to positively impact business and society" in a manner that is "grounded in a liberal arts tradition," stresses "innovative, creative, and distinctive programs," and recognizes "the interconnectedness of economic, social, and environmental sustainability." And since then, new SB programs and initiatives such as the Purposeful Leadership Initiative and related Master of Science in Organizational Leadership have advanced a broad view of business leadership in society.

Goals of Business & Society

The major strategic benefit approved by the Board of Trustees in May 2021 would be to solidify, enhance and amplify the distinctiveness of business education at Redlands, along with numerous consequent benefits associated with this re-positioning. These benefits would include:

Streamlined and New Opportunities for Undergraduate and Graduate Students. B&S presents an integrated perspective on all the business education offerings. This would allow for a more holistic recruitment of undergraduate, transfer, and graduate students. Pathways across the college offerings and within the rest of the university would provide new "4" and "+1" course and program opportunities for a diverse range of students, including business majors, social science majors, environment studies majors, Johnston students, as well as 5th year options for athletes.
Enhanced Brand Reputation for the College and University. The University of Redlands is generally known as a liberal arts college, even though it has popular and quality business and education offerings. There is an opportunity to differentiate Redlands among business offerings in the region (and beyond) and have positive spillover benefits on the university's overall reputation.
Growth in Business Education Enrollment. The most immediate gain would be through new and enhanced business programs, such as a 4+1 MBA or MSBA pathway program for undergraduates, a new Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA), heightened online options (both for undergraduates and graduates), and new certificates related to the Business & Society themes.
Synergies and Efficiencies. Over time, this new structure would allow for various synergies and efficiencies. Examples could be shared faculty hiring appointments connected to the college's priorities, broader cross-program professional faculty utilization, and combined fundraising for scholarships, capital improvements, and a naming gift. An early example of this is the plan to recruit two faculty in 2022-23 who would share appointments.
Externally, this change opens the door for collaborations with like-minded companies, universities, and organizations. Of note, Esri has recently committed $200,000 toward a "GIS & Society Initiative" that would examine the role of GIS in fostering corporate social responsibility. As another example, discussions are underway for a joint project with CETYS/Mexico on "Competitive Strategy with Social Responsibility" as part of the Harvard University MOC Network (of which SB/UR is a member).

About the Dean, School of Business

Dr. Thomas A. Horan is the H. Jess and Donna Senecal Chair and Dean of the School of Business at the University of Redlands. Since joining as Dean in 2017, he has led the University of Redlands into a new era of 21st Century business education grounded in the School's mission to empower its students to positively impact business and society. This has included launching a series of new initiatives and degrees, including Spatial Business Initiative, Purposeful Leadership Initiative and new master's degrees in Organizational Leadership and Business Analytics. Dr. Horan has also successfully led the school to receive a full 10-year accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). Most recently, he is leading the school to be at the forefront on the need for business students and professionals to integrate core business skills in a manner that addresses contemporary societal challenges.

Dr. Horan received his B.A. (with Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa honors) from the University of Vermont and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Claremont Graduate University. He then spent several years as a Senior Research Analyst for the Congressional General Accounting Office (GAO) in Washington DC, returning to Claremont Graduate University in 1995. Over the following 23 years, Dean Horan rose to full professor, then Dean of the School of Information Systems and Technology, followed by Dean of the Drucker School of Management.

Dr. Horan has published over 140 articles and two books. He has consulted with numerous public and private organizations, including the US Department of Transportation, United Nations Economic Development Corporation, Mayo Healthcare, Salesforce, and Esri. His research accomplishments have been honored on two occasions by the White House. Dr. Horan has also been a Visiting Scholar at Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Hawaii, University of Minnesota, and Hong Kong University.

Position Overview

The Associate Dean of Programs and Student Success works closely with the Dean in leading the internal operations for the ACBSP-accredited School of Business at the University of Redlands.

The Associate Dean of Programs and Student Success for the School of Business is a full-time administrative position that reports directly to the Dean. The Associate Dean of Programs and Student Success provides leadership for the achievement of excellence in the myriad operational responsibilities associated with achieving the teaching and learning objectives of the school.

Working with the Dean, Associate Dean of Academic Programs, Associate Dean of Strategic Initiatives, Associate Dean of Enrollment, Director of Student Success and Director of Campus Services, the Associate Dean of Operations is responsible for managing the day-to-day academic activities of the School of Business. This position oversees curriculum management, recruitment and evaluation of faculty and staff, policy development, resolution of student issues, and maintenance of ACBSP accreditation. This is a highly administrative, operational, and non-tenure role.

Role & Responsibilities

Manages the scheduling of courses and supervision of the part-time faculty.
Supervises the scheduling of courses for full-time faculty.
Along with the Director of Student Success, leads the School's Student Success Team.
With the Director of Campus Services, manages the university's regional campuses.
Serves as the Dean's representative on the Academic Review Board.
Act as the Dean's representative on the University Commencement Committee.
Serves on the Academic Planning and Oversight Committee.
Oversees the School's Academic Honesty Process.
Serves as the ACBSP "Champion" for the School of Business.
With the Director of Student Success, oversees the Whitehead Leadership Society.
Oversees the Study Abroad and International Student Orientation.
Advisor to the International Business Honor Society, Delta Mu Delta.
Performs other related duties and special projects as assigned or directed.

Objectives During the First 12 Months

Demonstrate leadership and collaboration with stakeholders in achieving strategic business and society goals and objectives especially with regards to the efficient and effective delivery of academic courses and programs.
Ensure high student satisfaction with academic programs, which currently stands at 95% satisfaction (2020 graduating students survey) and 90% satisfaction (2021 course survey).
Enhance student support services for success both in the classroom and through co-curriculum opportunities and in so doing maintaining or increasing current retention rate.
Successfully lead and coordinate campus staffing and classroom support across all campuses.
Ensure high quality adjuncts are hired, trained, and assigned to meet teaching needs for the different locations and modality offerings each term.
Create a motivating and positive working environment to produce high performance student services and campus services units.
Contribute to the school's strategic focus on empowering students to positively impact "business and society" and related initiatives.
Ability to problem solve and bring about positive solutions to issues at hand.

This position coordinates with other University offices responsible for contributing to the School's success; this includes but not limited to: Registrar Office, University Communications, Development & Alumni Relations, and Office of Career and Professional Education.

Direct reports: Director of Student Success, Director of Campus Services, Project Specialist(s), Transcription Specialist/Re-Entry Analyst, Adjunct Faculty.

This position is not tenured-track and does not have Faculty retreat rights.

Minimum Qualifications

The role requires a master's degree in a business field or field closely related to business from an accredited institution, plus 6-8 years of administrative experience in higher education related to the duties and competencies of the Associate Dean position.
Preferred qualifications: experience with ACBSP accreditation, assessment, and teaching or administering online, hybrid, or other non-traditional course delivery formats; doctorate degree in business field or field closely related to business from an accredited institution.
A valid driver's license with a good driving record and reliable vehicle is required.
Upon offer of employment, a current DMV printout will be required.
Must be able to competently interact with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.

Located at the base of the San Bernardino mountains, 60 miles northeast of Los Angeles and 45 miles west of Palm Springs, Redlands offers easy access to hiking and biking trails, an eclectic array of quaint shops, historic architecture, and a variety of local restaurants. The current population of Redlands is 71,707 based on the latest US Census estimates.

Redlands - known in 1900 as "The City of Millionaires" and later as "The City of Beautiful Homes" welcomes you! Founded in 1881 and incorporated in 1888, Redlands is a quintessential "big town" with a "small town" feel. For much of its history, Redlands was the "Washington Navel Orange Growing Capital of the World" with the citrus industry as the main focus of its economy.

Through the years the economy may have changed, but that special feeling of community in a small town hasn't. This is clear as you take a look around Redlands. Tree-lined State Street is still comprised primarily of beautiful historic buildings and locally owned shops and boutiques. Some of its most famous buildings, like A.K. Smiley Public Library, a Moorish-style library built in 1898, and the Redlands Bowl, built in 1930 and home of the oldest continuously free outdoor concert series in California, are merely steps from historic downtown.

University Station is a planned Arrow Commuter Rail terminal station that will serve the University of Redlands. It is planned to be located near North University Avenue on the southwest corner of campus and is expected to open for service with the system in early 2022. East of the station, the rail right of way continues as a multi-use recreation path: the Orange Blossom Trail. The Arrow Commuter Rail is an under-construction commuter rail line in San Bernardino County. It is planned to run between the San Bernardino Transit Center in downtown San Bernardino (connecting to Metrolink) and the University of Redlands in Redlands.
