Duty Schedule:

Student Interns will work on projects assigned daily. This includes working on watershed project, livestock, gardening, fencing, working with ranchers and farmers, conducting and organizing events, workshops and seminars, setting up for events and assist with planning and designing events. Students may be asked to present at conference and be willing to travel.

Summary/Objective of Position:

Student will learn to plan, organize, and conduct extension education in the field of livestock, range, soil, horticulture and watershed management. Student will work 20 hours a week when classes are in session and 40 hours a week during breaks between semesters. Start date of November 29, 2020 and End Date of May 8, 2021. A total of 12 student may be selected for the internship.

Student will work with sheep and cattle producer on implementing best management practices.
- Student will assist with conducting research on on Sheep, Forestry, and vegetation. This include data collection, site preparation, sheep delivery, analysis of data, attend necessary training offered for each research topic.
- Students will assist with daily task of feeding sheep, planting, watering, mending fences, organizing and setting up for events.
- Students may be asked to present and implement their projects.
- Students are asked to coordinate or lead a community outreach activity.
-Student will be asked to help construct a hoophouse/ greenhouse, corrals, learn some welding experience and laying pipe
- Student must be willing to shear, vaccinate, and work with live animals (horse, sheep, goat, pig, chicken and cattle)
-Student will be asked to participate in resource fairs, recruitment, and assisting with promoting Dine College.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

Minimum:

Student must be a current Dine College student with full time status.

Preferred:

Students who are interested in Agriculture, Environmental Science, and horticulture.

Knowledge:

Student must be knowledgeable in farming, ranching and public speaking activities. Students much be physically capable of conducting labor intensive work.

Skills:

Students must be able to speak in public, conduct presentations, work with hand tools and live animals.

Abilities:

Students must display interpersonal skills to work with other students, show leadership qualities to help move planning discussion forward, and be able to work with peers in difficult / strenuous activities.

Physical Requirements, Work Environment & Travel:

Student must be able to lift over 50 lbs and willing to work flexible hours such as evening and weekends. Students must communicate with the Land Grant staff on event planning, project planning and implementation.

Other Requirement(s):

Navajo speaking preferred but not required, may be asked to receive GSA driver permit.
