The USGS - Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center (WHCMSC) conducts a wide range of interdisciplinary research activities in marine, estuarine, lacustrine, and terrestrial regions of the United States, including the Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, the Arctic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, Great Lakes, and Alaskan North Slope, as well as international locations (e.g., South America and Europe). The research addresses geological issues of local, regional, national, and global concern, such as energy resources, natural hazards, climate change, environmental quality and health, and information management.
Purpose
The USGS Coastal Change Hazards Project, which is led by senior staff at both the WHCMSC and the PCMSC, requires a technical computing scientist to implement, test, and evaluate numerical algorithms using modern programming skills into high-performance computational programs. These programs simulate atmospheric, oceanographic, and coastal sediment morphological changes to the environment. Results are used by scientists to understand issues related to climate change, impacts of storms, and aggregate resource management.
Core Development Duties:
- Implement numerical algorithms into oceanographic, sediment, and wave models as part of the USGS COAWST system. Test the algorithm implementations using idealized test cases and realistic applications. Document the code.
- Plan, coordinate, and assist in numerical experiments for regional applications.
- Develop tools to compare observational data to numerical modeling results, evaluate data to ensure data integrity, process data for analysis, display, archive, and test hypotheses.
- Provide general technical services and expertise to scientists, engineers, and technicians on a broad range of objectives and support requirements for field and modeling studies of coastal and marine geology.
Field Program Operations:
- As required, support scientific staff for planning, designing, and performing field studies to collect data in support of coastal change processes. These data will be used to test and validate numerical applications for regional studies.
Office Duties:
- Collaborate on or lead the production of peer-reviewed papers on the results of work completed, including implementation of new codes, validation of results, and applications to regional studies.
- Prepare presentations as requested on the results of completed work.
- Provide input on scientific goals and budgetary requirements for meeting the USGS Coastal Change Hazards Project mission and its obligations to external agencies.
- Disseminate and visualize numerical model data and filed observations via an online data portal

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in civil, environmental, coastal, aerospace, or computer engineering is required. At least one year of postdoctoral experience preferred.
- 5 to 7 years of experience with the following:
- Ability to extend and modify existing techniques to solve a variety of technical problems.
- Skill and experience in high performance computing and numerical code development using FORTRAN and Matlab necessary; knowledge and experience in python, perl, Java, and html5 a plus.
- Skills in development of numerical algorithms and incorporation into model systems.
- Dissemination/acquisition of data using CF conventions via Thematic Real-time Environmental Distributed Data Services (THREDDS) data dissemination methods.
- Knowledge and experience in oceanographic data, sediment transport processes, physical oceanography, and ocean engineering.
- Skill and experience to maintain, program, and run numerical oceanographic models, including COAWST, Regional Ocean Modelling System (ROMS), and Simulating Waves Nearshore (SWAN).
- Ability to communicate in writing in a professional manner. Experience and skill in technical writing.
- Co-author on at least 2 peer-reviewed papers.
