Job Description Summary:

PTC Therapeutics, Inc., in Mountain View, California, is seeking an experienced Biochemist to join a team of scientists developing cutting-edge therapeutic interventions for diverse diseases. In this role you will be responsible for optimizing and executing biochemical, enzymatic, and/or biophysical assays to assess compound efficacy and potency, as well as elucidate small molecule compound binding properties and/or molecular mechanisms-of-action. Experience with the analysis, interpretation, and communication of complex data sets to an interdisciplinary team is required. You will also thrive in a dynamic setting within a cross-functional team.

Job Description:

Primary duties/responsibilities:
  • Under limited supervision, executes experiments of low to moderate throughput to support drug discovery and optimization projects.
  • Optimizes novel biochemical, enzymatic, or biophysical target-based assays to demonstrate disease-relevant compound mechanism of action.
  • Supports cloning, expression, and purification of target proteins for biochemical/biophysical studies.
  • Analyzes data and effectively communicates key findings to supervisor and multidisciplinary team members.
  • Collaborates and coordinates effectively with other team members to maximize workflow.
  • Reads relevant literature and contributes practical advice to define experiments to advance department objectives.
  • May participate in the development and writing of patent applications.
  • Maintains a detailed laboratory notebook.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned.
  • Interview and contribute to the evaluation of candidates.
  • May provide scientific advice to project teams in areas of expertise.
  • Abides by all safety and regulatory guidelines.
  • Contributes to general lab needs such as:
    • Equipment maintenance.
    • Capital equipment purchases.


KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES REQUIRED
  • Experience optimizing and conducting moderate throughput biochemical and biophysical studies of compound activity on enzyme function as well as mechanism of action studies.
  • Experience purifying proteins from overexpressing host systems using column chromatography, FPLC preferred (AKTA).
  • Hands-on experience with protein overexpression systems such as bacteria, insect cells, and mammalian cells.


* Minimum level of education and years of relevant work experience.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in a relevant scientific discipline, preferably Biochemistry, Biophysics, or Molecular Biology.
  • Must have 4 or more years (with Bachelor's) or 0-2 years (with Master's) of relevant work experience.


* Special knowledge or skills needed and/or licenses or certificates required.
  • Analytical thinker with excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Possesses knowledge of scientific principles and concepts.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and skills.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and deadlines in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Excellent planning, organization and time management skills including the ability to support and prioritize multiple projects.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the strategic alignment of his/her work with corporate or lab goal(s).
  • Demonstrated aptitude to work on complex problems with high technical proficiency to generate compelling experimental data.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office preferably MS Excel and MS PowerPoint or similar.


*Special knowledge or skills and/or licenses or certificates preferred.
  • Experience in protein quantification and analysis methods such as gel electrophoresis, Western blot, ELISA, MSD.
  • Familiarity with laboratory automation and liquid handling platforms (e.g. Tecan Fluent)
