POSITION SUMMARY

The Riparian Restoration Project Manager works with the Riparian Restoration Program team to implement restoration projects on Puget Sound Region Rivers. The project manager identifies restoration opportunities through partnerships with external agencies, organizations and landowners and through support from the department director secures funding to plan, design and implement restoration projects across the Puget Sound region to enhance riparian conditions on focus Rivers.

The Riparian Restoration Program is a landscape-scale, community focused restoration model that offers invasive plant abatement on public and private lands (primarily knotweed control), native plant installations on public lands, collaborative restoration projects with private riverfront landowners, and targeted outreach and educational events. Forterra's Riparian Restoration Program team works in partnership with local jurisdictions, government, and other non-profits.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Restoration Project Management (55% of FTE)

* Plan and implement and monitor riparian restoration projects (on public and private land), including:
* Mapping existing invasive plant infestations
* Prescribing restoration BMPs
* Developing planting plans
* Purchasing supplies and materials
* Scheduling and overseeing ground crews to complete the work
* Recording and mapping invasive plant control results using GIS software
* Establish and maintain relationships and partnerships with organizations, corporations, community groups and government agencies
* Serve as the project contact for external partners, managing relationships and continue to build positive relationships with project partners
* Create and deliver progress reports, annual reports, and any/other reporting metrics as defined by the contract/grant or as requested by the agency lead/grantor
* Create an annual budget and a related scope of work and work with agency lead/grantor to create and complete a signed contracts/agreements
* Identify, design and implement riparian restoration projects across the Puget Sound region with support from the Riparian Restoration Director and other team members
* Manage overall restoration contractor and crew operations and schedule.
* Evaluate and pursue new project opportunities for expanded programming
* Work with and provide mentorship to AmeriCorps members and Stewardship Coordinators to ensure deliverables are met
* Represent Forterra at partnership meetings and share updates on projects and grants
* Cultivate and manage relationships with private landowners along keystone river reaches
* Administer the contract including tracking hours and all expenses, monthly billing and keep Director of Riparian Restoration informed on the financial status at least quarterly

Grant Writing and Reporting (15% of FTE)

* Work in coordination with Director of Riparian Restoration to pursue grants, contracts, and other fundraising opportunities
* Collect and track program and project data
* Conduct financial reviews and submit quarterly invoicing and interim reporting
* Track project milestones and accomplishments for reporting purposes

Outreach and Community Education (15% of FTE)

* Implement targeted outreach to streamside communities

* Build and manage positive relationships within streamside communities through targeted outreach, educational programming and technical assistance
* Manage and implement volunteer restoration events
* Engage with members of the public encountered while completing work in the field, including potential encounters with houseless individuals living within restoration project areas
* Work with youth in mentorship program to educate them about restoration principles and lead youth in field activities including planting, maintenance and field experiential learning

Administrative (15% of FTE)

* Actively contribute to team meetings; all-staff meetings
* Submit out of pocket expenses, and business credit card reports and timesheets
* Attend anti-racism meetings/trainings and apply knowledge into workplans
* Attend professional development trainings/workshops for continuing education and incorporate knowledge gained into workplans
* Assist in managing Americorps Stewardship Associates, assign
* Tasks and provide training and guidance to support project deliverables and ensure members have meaningful involvement in restoration projects as appropriate
* Track and update project expenses and perform other duties as assigned

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS

Required

* Bachelor's degree in environmental science, natural resource management, botany, landscape architecture, or related field OR 5 years of equivalent experience
* Minimum 3 years of related work experience, including experience with riparian restoration, natural resource management, and coordinating volunteers
* Experience developing and managing restoration projects, scopes of work and budgets
* Experience writing and managing grants
* Valid, insurable driver's license/record

Preferred

* Experience using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning Systems (GPS)
* Washington Department of Agriculture Pesticide Applicator License with Aquatic Endorsement, or willingness to acquire
* Knowledge of geomorphic process-based river restoration principles and salmon life cycle

COMPETENCIES

* Ability to develop a positive working relationship with agency personnel, staff, volunteers, and community supporters
* Ability to work in physically demanding riverine conditions throughout the seasons and in all weather
* Able to be flexible under pressure and resourceful. Must be able to work independently and excel as part of a team balancing multiple priorities and deadlines
* Ability to be well organized, detail-oriented, able to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously with minimal supervision
* Skilled in the Microsoft Windows operating environment; high level of proficiency with MS Office Suite
* Ability and willingness to work some non-standard hours for community meetings and volunteer events, including occasional evenings and weekends
* Ability to complete restoration planting designs based on site
* Assessments and resources
* Ability to lead community events and partnership meetings and delegate supporting tasks to team members such as note taking
* Knowledge of Pacific NW native species and restoration techniques, best management practices for controlling common invasive plants, and issues associated with land management (vandalism, off-road vehicle use, etc.)
* Ability and willingness to work non-standard hours, including evenings and weekends, with advance notice (estimated but not limited to 10 Saturdays/year)

TRAVEL, WORKING CONDITIONS, AND PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT

This position is subject to activities beyond typical indoor environmental conditions of a professional office setting. The essential physical requirements of this position include:

* Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or an equivalent amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects

* Ability to conduct physical site inspections on uneven terrain including brushy, forested environments in wetlands and along stream and river corridors. Hazards may include steep, slippery, unstable slopes near deep and/or fast moving water, and encounters with wildlife and potentially houseless people living in restoration project areas
* Ability to safely and correctly use hand tools associated with restoration work, and ability to instruct and supervise others in the use of same tools
* Ability to travel over a variety of terrains
* Ability to sit or otherwise remain in a stationary position at a computer workstation for the majority of the work day
* Ability to frequently move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office equipment, etc.
* Extensive travel and field time, approximately 50% of annual work hours with season
