The department of Biology is seeking a postdoctoral research associate to work in the laboratory of Dr. Michael Timko. The research associate will participate in research aimed at legume improvement through molecular breeding with an emphasis on introgression of disease and pest resistance. The main targets are cowpea and other orphan legume crops for marginal environments. Prior training and experience in plant breeding, molecular breeding, diversity analysis and the use of current molecular marker technologies (SNPs, GBS) is required and knowledge of plant pathology (biotic stress) preferred.

- Ability to perform genetic crosses and develop new populations for selected traits; ability to maintain existing seed inventory
- Perform routine molecular biological experiments including DNA extractions, amplicon analysis, genotyping using SSR and allele-specific SNP markers
- Developing robust PCR based genetic markers for targeted improvement of cowpea
- Understanding and using basic bioinformatics and computational software for single trait and QTL mapping in biparental and advanced intercross populations for key biotic and abiotic constraints of cowpea and other plants; experience with parasitic weeds a plus
- Analyze large SNP data sets derived from cowpea Infinium iSelect SNP array or alternative genotyping methods; ability to map short sequence reads and perform SNP calling a plus
- Developing molecular breeding strategies in collaboration with West African Cowpea Consortium breeders
