SUMMARY STATEMENT:

The Animal Keeper, Vertebrates is primarily concerned with providing a high quality visitor experience through maintaining and practicing high professional standards for the husbandry, exhibition and educational use of the animal collection. They are responsible for the daily care of the animal collection ensuring sufficient numbers of healthy well-trained animals to support the daily program use of the collection. The Animal Keeper, Vertebrates assists in coordinating the animal enrichment program and maintains accurate records in compliance with USDA APHIS regulations and AZA Accreditation standards. The Animal Keeper presents wildlife and natural history interpretations and programs on a regular basis.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provides care for a live animal collection of 120+ animals representing approximately 50 species that includes mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fresh water fish, and terrestrial invertebrates.
  • Assists with the department's animal enrichment program for approximately 50 mammals and birds.
  • Writes and updates approximately 50 animal natural history sheets.
  • Assists in training other educators and handles approximately 60 animals used education programs.
  • Shares the responsibility of monitoring approximately 400 animal appearances in the Museum's educational activities.
  • Assists in general cleaning and maintenance of the Live Animal Care Center 3200 square foot facility and animal displays in six exhibit areas within the Museum.


WORK SCHEDULE:

This position is temporary, full-time, 40 hours/week, Tuesday-Saturday through the end of November 2021.

REPORTS TO:

Manager, Living Collections

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • 2 or more years of experience working directly in animal care in a zoo, museum, aquarium, or nature center.
  • Working knowledge and experience with the care, exhibition and educational use of wild mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and invertebrates as well as small domestic animals.
  • Ability to create and maintain aesthetically pleasing animal displays.
  • Working knowledge and experience providing animal enrichment activities.
  • Enriching animal environments.
  • Experience training and supervising volunteers in a museum, zoo, aquarium or nature center.
  • Public speaking and interpretation skills.
  • High comfort level working with the public in a very busy setting.


STARTING SALARY:

Non-Exempt (Hourly). $15.00-$17.00/hour.
