Job Purpose

The senior-level/lead Marine Mammal Observer (MMO) is responsible for overseeing and managing MMO duties, which includes collecting and recording unbiased data and data entry during the project's monitoring mitigation, and reporting program.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Manage station personnel on how to perform monitoring as well as performing monitoring duties.
  • Create an ice work plan and conduct training of station crew prior to deployment.
  • Maintaining and inventorying relevant equipment (e.g., visual, PAM, office supplies, literature, computers, etc.).
  • Record keeping and reporting of operations; scheduling MMO rotations; ensuring professionalism as a MMO, abiding by proper safety procedures; and communication between MMOs, authorized action organization, vessel's crew, third-party MMO provider company, and regulatory agencies.
  • The senior-level/lead MMO should have thorough knowledge of the required monitoring, mitigation, and reporting program as well as of protected species in the action area.
  • MMOs are responsible for collecting data on species, numbers, location date/time, behaviors and construction activities during a sighting; and ensuring systematic and standardized data collection.
  • Conduct marine mammal monitoring during all pier construction activities.
  • Notify work crews to shut down operations if necessary to prevent non-acoustic injury to marine mammals from potentially hazardous in-water construction activities at the pier.
  • Record observations and behavioral responses of any marine mammals observed during operations.
  • All other duties as assigned.

  • U.S citizenship or permanent residence is required.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in one of the natural sciences and a minimum of 30 semester hours or equivalent in the biological sciences.
  • At least one undergraduate course in math or statistics.
  • Experience with data entry on computers.
  • Must have previous experience and must be trained in marine mammal identification and behaviors.
  • Must have specific experience observing protected species found in the operating area. To include: Antarctic minke whale, arnoux's beaked whale, blue whale (endangered), fin whale, hourglass dolphin, humpback whale, killer whale, long-finned pilot whale, southern bottlenose whale, sei whale (endangered), southern right whale (endangered), sperm whale (endangered), Antarctic fur seal, crabeater seal, southern elephant seal, leopard seal and weddell seal.
  • Certification Requirements:
    • Must have successfully completed a NMFS-approved training course with a passing grade of 80% or greater.

Physical Requirements
  • Deployment will be required in this. The individual in the position must successfully complete the physical and dental examinations as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica. Failure to meet these requirements may result in withdrawal of employment offer or other employment action.
  • Complies with applicable safety, environment, health, and waste management policies and procedure.
  • Individual must be capable of operating a standard desktop computer; must be able to lift and carry up to 10 pounds.

Position Expectations
  • This is a full-time, seasonal position located in Antarctica.
  • All expenses paid while on-ice meals, lodging, medical, gear, travel to and from Antarctica.
