The Research Engineer will be responsible for the research and development of new polymer modified asphalt materials and products for the CertainTeed Roofing group. The incumbent will be located at the R&D center in Malvern, PA. The individual will collaborate with internal and external customers to identify new sources of polymers, polymer modified asphalt products, and other related raw materials that can improve product performance or reduce cost. The individual will work with diverse team (including R&D, Marketing, Purchasing and Operations) in a team-orientated, interdisciplinary environment to evaluate new raw materials and develop advanced analytical techniques. He/she will conduct lab experiments, analyze data and present results. The individual will also support manufacturing plants on raw material changes. The incumbent must be capable of planning, executing, and delivering results on time. The individual must maintain safe and clean working environment in laboratories by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
Primary Responsibilities:
- General support to the Little Rock, AR Commercial Roofing Plant- help with any reformulation, technological advancements, plant trials, etc.
- Formulate and optimize our polymer modified asphalt products used in our residential roofing plants- sealants and laminates
- General support to our polymer modified asphalt shingle product- North Gate
- Evaluate any new additives or new products that have a potential use in the polymer modified asphalt space
- Manage process improvements or specification changes as required
- Will assist in plant trials if needed
Competencies:
- Hand-on skills in safely conducting laboratory experiments
- Good attention to detail and quality of work
- Ability to summarize data and write reports
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
- BS Degree in Chemical/Petroleum/Material Science Engineering, Chemistry or other similar fields
- Co-op or internship experience working in a laboratory or plant setting (industrial experience) preferred
- Domestic travel may be required but no more than 25%
