Responsible and accountable for leading the company's safety initiatives to continuously improve DHI's safety performance. Consults, coaches and motivates managers, supervisors, and employees in safe work behaviors. Keeps DHI in compliance with EPA, DNR, and OSHA regulations. Includes performing environmental related testing. Coordinates with Production, Human Resources, and Management to effectively manage plant safety programs to ensure a safe work environment.

DUTIES

1.Develop programs and processes that identify and analyze safety, health, and environmental risks that affect employees; develop corrective and preventative measures in relation to the risks.

2.Develop and recommend general accident prevention programs to include specific protective procedures and devices. Recommend actions to be taken to reduce risk and accident occurrence.

3.Direct all safety, health, and environmental activities as required by OSHA and EPA and DNR. Assists HR in the coordination of safety programs, procedures, and training in accordance with OSHA standards (such as blood borne pathogens, first aid, hearing protection, emergency action plans, respiratory, lock out tag out, etc.)

4.Promote plant safety by working with all departments to analyze current and future situations and recommend safety improvements.

5.Work closely with Human Resources on worker's compensation concerns. Investigate injury reports and follow-up to ensure actions are taken.

6.Coordinate with manufacturing, engineering, etc., on the design, construction, and implementation of new equipment, facilities and processes to insure safe design.

7.Conduct safety audits of facilities to pinpoint unsafe working conditions, behaviors and practices and develop sound recommendations for corrections.

8.Update management on the status of Company's safety program through monthly and quarterly reports.

9.Monitor and report all hazardous material generated and transported from the facility. This includes conducting necessary weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual testing of hazardous waste and wastewater and completing associated reports; handling air permit requirements; and handling other environmental regulatory compliance for federal and state agencies, etc.

10.Works with Human Resources and Engineering for all environmental related record keeping and administration. This would include compliance with all permits, operating conditions and regulatory standards.

11.Promotes a culture of safety, and develops and maintains positive working relationships with employees.

A strong enthusiasm for the field of environmental engineering and safety.

Knowledge of Iowa Worker's Compensation Laws, OSHA laws and regulations, Environmental requirements on both a State and Federal level, DNR requirements.

Ability to create positive relationships with employees and management. Exceptional oral/written communication skills, participatory team management leadership style.

Good public/employee relation's skills, including training, educating, and promoting skills.

Good problem solving, analysis, and decision-making ability.

Must demonstrate an innovative and creative approach to efficient and effective risk management.

Reads and comprehends verbal and written instructions. Ability to effectively present information to employees within the company. Capably responds to inquiries or complaints regarding specific area.

Capacity to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to convert units of measure.

Aptitude to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw conclusions. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or schedule form.
