Description
Job Title Research Assistant, Molecular Biology
Laboratory / Department Laboratory of Molecular Biology
Department Description
Research in the laboratory of molecular biology aims to identify the genes, circuits, cells, macromolecular assemblies and individual molecules that contribute to the function and dysfunction of the mammalian brain. Scientists in the laboratory of molecular biology have developed a suite of novel approaches based on the manipulation of bacterial artificial chromosomes (BACs) to investigate the histological and functional complexities of the mammalian brain in vivo and to understand how these mechanisms become dysfunctional in disease.
Detailed Description
The Research Assistant will work on a project to identify novel strategies to delay the onset and/or slow progression of Huntington's disease. Responsibilities include preparing human brain samples from donor tissue and using established profiling assays such as ATAC-Seq, bisulfite-Seq, and Ox-bisulfite-Seq to elucidate the epigenetic properties of the DNA. Responsibilities include subcellular fractionation, isolation of cell components with antibodies or DNA probes (via FACS), RNA extraction, cDNA preparation, PCR, gel electrophoresis, and library preparation. Additional responsibilities include preparing genetic material for BeadChip methylation assays and trinucleotide repeat sizing.
Job Requirements
Bachelor's degree in science required; educational emphasis in neuroscience or biology preferred. Previous experience with RNA isolation and in situ hybridization is a plus. Familiarity with established profiling assays such as ATAC-Seq, bisulfite-Seq, and Ox-bisulfite-Seq to elucidate the epigenetic properties of the DNA is a plus. Must have computer skills and familiarity with NCBI database tools. Must be organized, have excellent communication skills, and keep clear accurate records.
