Cures Start Here. At Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, home to three Nobel laureates, interdisciplinary teams of world-renowned scientists seek new and innovative ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer, HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening diseases. Fred Hutch's pioneering work in bone marrow transplantation led to the development of immunotherapy, which harnesses the power of the immune system to treat cancer. An independent, nonprofit research institute based in Seattle, Fred Hutch houses the nation's first cancer prevention research program, as well as the clinical coordinating center of the Women's Health Initiative and the international headquarters of the HIV Vaccine Trials Network. Careers Start Here.

At Fred Hutch, we believe that the innovation, collaboration, and rigor that result from diversity and inclusion are critical to our mission of eliminating cancer and related diseases. We seek employees who bring different and innovative ways of seeing the world and solving problems. Fred Hutch is in pursuit of becoming an antiracist organization. We are committed to ensuring that all candidates hired share our commitment to diversity, antiracism, and inclusion.

A Staff Scientist position is available in the MacPherson lab, which is focused on the biology of small cell lung cancer (SCLC). We apply functional screens and analyses of genetically engineered murine (GEM) and patient derived xenograft (PDX) models toward understanding genes mutated in SCLC and basis of response toward conventional and novel therapies. We are also interested in understanding how to augment immune responses in SCLC. The Staff Scientist would help advance translational research in the lab by working both on independent and collaborative projects. The candidate may contribute to a translational NIH Lung SPORE grant, including study of patient samples and derived models.

  • Perform independent research and also contribute as a part of a team in various projects as needed
  • Conduct therapeutic studies using murine models and perform molecular analyses to understand treatment responses
  • Conduct cell-based functional CRISPR screens
  • Revise animal protocols and help the lab maintain regulatory requirements
  • There is potential to mentor trainees
  • Present results in group meetings and prepare data for publication

  • PhD and 2+ years of postdoctoral experience
  • Proficiency with murine models and with molecular biology/biochemistry
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Must be able to design and execute experiments, interpret data and present results
  • Must have a record of publication in peer-reviewed journals

A statement describing your commitment and contributions toward greater diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism in your career or that will be made through work at Fred Hutch is requested of all finalists.
