JOB DESCRIPTION

The FWC is seeking an individual with strong fisheries stock assessment skills to fill an Associate Research Scientist position in its Marine Fisheries Research, Stock Assessment and Modeling Program. This position is headquartered in St. Petersburg, Florida.

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Participating or leading the development and implementation of stock assessment models for marine fisheries stocks in the southeastern US.
  • Monitor the status of selected marine fisheries to determine how well Florida's management goals are being met.
  • Develop and implement procedures for responding to assistance requests from the public in a timely fashion. Keep current on relevant scientific literature.
  • Prepare stock assessments and other analytical and data products for Florida's marine resource managers. Prepare reports and manuscripts for findings of the above analyses.
  • Provide and interpret fisheries information from a state or regional basis for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and other relevant management agencies.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the physical or natural sciences or mathematics and four years of professional experience in one of the physical or natural sciences or mathematics; or a master's degree from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the physical or natural sciences or mathematics and three years of professional experience as described above; or a doctorate from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the physical or natural sciences or mathematics and one year of professional experience as described above.

**Preference may be given to candidates who demonstrate knowledge and professional experience with quantitative fisheries stock assessment methods, statistical analysis and project design; strong project management experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of terminology, principles, and techniques used in scientific research, analysis, or testing; strong knowledge of fisheries stock assessment models, including the principles, practices and procedures used in single species and/or ecosystem models; Skill in written and verbal communications and in the use of personal computers and associated software. Ability to: manage and/or participate in multiple research projects effectively; plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; supervise others effectively; work independently; utilize problem-solving techniques; and understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures; travel extensively and work hours in excess of 40 per week, nights and weekends. Ability to maintain valid drivers license.
