Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must be a current employee of the Department of Health.
  • Have a bachelor's degree with a minimum of 30 semester hours or 40 quarter hours of class work in public health, environmental health, environmental science, or a physical or biological science.
  • Required to obtain certification for Onsite Sewage Treatment and Disposal Systems within 6 months of hire.
  • Ability to travel to various locations in Brevard County up to 100+ miles a day in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift 50+ pounds and work outside all day in all forms of weather.
  • Required to work before, during, and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency.
  • Must be proficient in computers, lap tops, and Microsoft and other computer programs.
  • Must carry a valid Driver's license.


Job Overview:
  • Reviews septic system applications.
  • Writes and issues septic system permits.
  • Conducts inspections of septic systems.
  • Uses bucket auger to dig 6-foot holes and profiles soil for color and texture.
  • Conducts site evaluations for septic system suitability.
  • Responsible for all data entry of all inspections and other work completed.
  • Operates 4-wheel drive vehicles.
  • Uses laser level, probe, measuring tape, lid puller, scaled ruler, and other tools.
  • Enforces septic system regulations.
  • Conducts field inspections of regulated facilities.
  • Participates in public education (individually, group setting, and phone calls).
  • Attends training sessions, seminars, and meetings to obtain education on all environmental health regulations related to public health that are under the jurisdiction of the department.
  • Investigates sanitary nuisance complaints.
  • Protects Public Health.
