Computational Biology and Digital Sciences is a global organization across multiple sites at Boehringer Ingelheim: Ridgefield, CT, Biberach, Germany and Vienna, Austria. We are currently hiring a Computational Biology Expert in Ridgefield, CT.
A Senior Scientist or Principal Scientist establishes scientific/technology strategic priorities and leads the identification and implementation of state of the art capabilities across functions within the global Discovery Research organization that have broad impact on portfolio advancement. Lead multiple target projects, and overcomes obstacles to ensure projects and initiatives result in a decision. The Senior Scientist or Principal Scientist has responsibility for the development and growth of the portfolio and for leading external collaborations.
In the Bioinformatics Expert role , the incumbent works as a member of Cross-Functional Project Teams, contributes to the discovery of First-in-Class or Breakthrough drugs. Evaluate, acquire/develop, and champion the use of genomics data and bioinformatics tools as a foundation to drive innovation in the BI portfolio. Support new therapeutic concept (NTC) discovery, proof of clinical principal (PoCP), and mechanism of action (MOA) studies. Lead/contribute to disease and mechanistic model characterization to expand the role of genes, pathways, and cell types in the pathogenesis. The Bioinformatics Expert contributes to projects across multiple Therapeutic Area's (TA's) at the Ridgefield site, including I&R, Cardiometabolic Research, and Cancer Immunology.

Duties & Responsibilities:
- Development of Analysis Plans in close collaboration with the TA Partner, by 1.) providing conceptual input into analysis plans (approaches and experimental design), and 2.) engaging in cross-functional discussions to refine plans and identify key priorities
- Completes bioinformatics data analysis as specified by analysis plans, and provides interpretation and context to results of analysis
- Identify, evaluate, and apply new methodologies and emerging technologies, and develop software tools when appropriate, to contribute to projects across TAs
- Develop talent, mentor staff, and empower teams to ensure decisions are placed at the right level
- Demonstrate a high level of AAI (accountability, agility, intrapreneurship) capabilities by constantly assessing priorities and quickly implement change when needed, inspiring team(s) to surpass their own timelines in order to bring breakthrough medicines to patients in need, championing his/her teams' innovative ideas, empowering and motivating team(s) to discover breakthrough medicines that will improve patients' lives, and effectively making decisions with accountability/agility
- Comply with all company policies, and maintain high quality of data and analyses (consistency checks at the logical and scientific level are implemented)
- Management of project/scientific/technology complexity within teams in the US and with global colleagues is expected.
- Work closely with Bioinformatics Partners; collaborate with other Bioinformatics Experts; meets with Discovery Research, TMCP, and/or external collaborators; interfaces with and participates in drug-discovery project teams; works within a global, cross-functional organization; interacts with IT and Biostatistics
- Is a recognized expert in an area of genomics, proteomics, epigenetics, and/or other high dimensional data analysis; always up-to-date with the latest methods developments in the field; fully understands internal capabilities in the area, as well as external capabilities (service providers as well as academics and collaborators).
- Provides expert-level scientific and bioinformatics expertise within the area(s) of biology and human disease addressed by the TAs. Knowledge of current key datasets, therapeutic landscape and demographic/epidemiological considerations within TA is required.
Principal Scientist Requirements:
- Ph.D. degree or equivalent in biological, statistical, computational, or other quantitative science.
- Five (5) or more years of relevant experience in drug discovery or biomedical research environment after completing a doctoral degree, with at least two (2) years' experience in drug discovery.
- Is a recognized science and/or technology subject matter expert across BI with a sustained publication and external presentation record. She/he identifies new methodologies, protocols and/or test procedures that contribute to department and Discovery Research goals and proactively proposes creative solutions to department or Discovery Research leadership.
- Experience with experiment design, and hands-on NGS (RNAseq, single-cell NGS, whole genome, exome, miRNA, or mcrobiome) data processing and analysis.
- Experience in biological pathways, data visualization, network and systems biology (GSEA, GeneGO, CBDD, Cytoscape, Reactome).
- Proficiency using R and Bioconductor packages, and one or more programming language (Python, Perl, and Javascript).
- Track record of designing, leading, and managing computational research projects.
- Background in or familiarity with gene expression data (microarray, RNA seq) analysis and biological interpretation.
- Understanding of biology of the diseases relevant to at least one of the TAs in Ridgefield (I&R, CMDR, and Cancer Immunology).
- Excellent communication and presentation skills.
- Experience working with patient-centric data, GWAS, and eQTL analysis is desirable.
- Experience working with Linux environment, high performance computing clusters, and cloud computing.
