Cramer Fish Sciences (CFS) has an opening for a full-time Biometrician in our Issaquah, WA office. CFS is a fisheries consulting firm that conducts research and monitoring throughout the Pacific Northwest and California. Our mission is to rigorously apply the scientific method to afford our clients innovative, scientifically robust solutions to address a variety of fisheries and environmental challenges. The CFS team achieves this through effective and unbiased data collection, insightful analysis and interpretation, and clear communications and publication of results in scientific journals.

The position of Biometrician provides critical support by conducting and assisting the Senior Biometrician with advanced statistical analysis, mathematical modeling, and simulations. The Biometrician works as part of a team providing specialized services to clients helping them understand the effects of resource management actions on aquatic habitat and fish.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Conduct advanced statistical analysis, simulation modeling, mathematics, and advanced statistics to help resolve challenging resource management problems.
  • Collaborate with Biologists to develop models and quantitative assessments for ecological data.
  • Serve as a data analyst to develop experimental design for field studies and to creatively analyze data.
    • Common studies include estimates of abundance and survival from mark-recapture studies, demonstrating the effects of restoration by evaluating pre and post conditions, and assessing remotely sensed data to derive habitat metrics.
    • Modeling projects often include relating resource management actions to behavior and life-cycle dynamics of salmonids or other sensitive aquatic organisms, and to guide prioritization of recovery actions or monitoring progress towards recovery.
    • Analysis and management of complex spatial data in GIS.
  • Supervise data summarization and analysis by Technicians and junior Biologists.
  • Provide guidance and expertise on hypothesis testing, data collection, and statistical analysis.
  • Write and edit technical documents, as well as potential presentation of data and findings at scientific conferences.
  • Provide critical review of reports, analyses, experimental designs, and sampling plans.

Critical Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (required):
  • Statistical analysis and study design: Demonstrated skills in complex data analysis, management, developing predictive models, and developing sampling and experimental designs.
  • Modeling Expertise: Strong knowledge and skills in modeling techniques. Is sought out by peers to assist in solving contracted complex, dynamic fishery, or related projects.
  • Team Participation Skills: Within a team and Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) culture meets high performance and quality standards and contributes directly to overall team success. Views all members of the team as critical and important and treats team members with respect and professionalism. Serves as an informal statistics/modeling mentor to team members.
  • Science-Business balance. This individual should demonstrate an ability to collaborate with scientists in order to develop results. Additionally, they should exhibit an excitement about science, natural resources, and resolving complex fishery problems and an understanding of management and business functions to help manage CFS as a profitable business.

Education/Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master's degree with one or more years of related experience with mathematical modeling and statistics.
  • Ph.D. in a related field a plus.
  • Strong technical writing and advanced computer skills.
  • Familiarity with standard statistical software (R, Python, etc.).
  • Demonstrated skills in complex data management, developing predictive models, graphs, and data analysis.
  • Able to communicate project methods and findings in presentations and reports.

Desired Experience
  • Experience with collection and analysis of complex ecological datasets.
  • Experience with fisheries, forestry, or other science related fields.
  • Computer programming, automation, software development, machine learning, or neural network classification experience.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:
  • Possible long periods of computerized data analysis in an office environment.
  • Working irregular hours in order to meet project deadlines.
  • Occasional travel.
