Organization and Job ID
Job ID: 312159
Directorate: Energy and Environment
Division: Coastal Sciences
Group: Coastal Modeling
Job Description
The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking highly motivated postdoctoral researchers to join a well-established coastal ocean modeling team to conduct marine energy modeling research in the PNNL - Seattle office. PNNL has developed a Current Energy Conversion (CEC) module within the unstructured-grid Finite Volume Community Model FVCOM (FVCOM-CEC) for tidal stream and ocean current energy resource characterization and assessment. The selected candidate is expected to improve and apply FVCOM-CEC to simulate the effects of tidal or ocean current energy extraction on physical and biogeochemical processes induced by energy extraction in coastal waters and regional ocean. The candidate is also expected to conduct model validation with field measurements and refine methodology for resource estimate. The tidal energy resource modeling project is funded by the Water Power Technologies Office, U.S. Department of Energy.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.
Preferred Qualifications
The selected candidate should demonstrate 1) strong modeling experience with state-of-the-art coastal ocean models, such as FVCOM, ROMS and HYCOM; 2) excellent knowledge in coastal oceanography and hydrodynamics; 3) good scientific writing and communication skills; 3) strong problem-solving and scientific programing skills; 4) solid knowledge of high performance computing; 4) knowledge biogeochemical modeling is a plus.
Ph.D. in physical oceanography, geoscience, ocean engineering, civil and environmental engineering, atmospheric science or related fields. 3.5 GPA or higher is preferred.
