Background:
The Eastern Ecological Science Center (EESC) of the U.S. Geological Survey is a professional scientific organization responsible for national leadership in conservation research of the nation's fish and wildlife resources and their habitats. This position is in the EESC's Population Conservation and Genetics Team (PCG) at the Leetown Research Laboratory, located in Kearneysville, West Virginia.
Purpose:
The USGS EESC-PCG requires services to support collection, analysis and interpretation of conservation genetic and genomic data, and to summarize findings in a variety of platforms including peer reviewed journal articles, reports, and presentations. These tasks are to support efforts to provide decision-relevant conservation genetics information to state and federal management agencies.
Task Descriptions:
- Collaborate with the government technical liaison and associated colleagues to provide scientific support for the collection and data entry of biological, physical, and chemical samples from both aquatic and terrestrial species.
- Maintain scientific instrumentation, collect samples, and analyze samples, organize and store samples
- Transfer and store electronic data among computers and software programs to ensure appropriate redundancy
- Perform bioinformatics analyses on both shot gun and targeted amplicon sequencing generated at the Eastern Ecological Science Center to address a variety of research questions identified by the Principal Investigators.
- Transfer electronic data among software programs and organize data in spreadsheets
- Prepare graphs and charts for scientific reports and presentations
- Enter and maintain data in local databases
- Assist Principal Investigators efforts to develop peer-reviewed manuscripts, technical reports, and publications regarding the conservation genetics and genomics of sensitive samples consistent with USGS Fundamental Science Practices.

Some travel may be required (25%)
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Successful completion of a graduate degree from an accredited college or university in Biology, Ecology, Bioinformatics or a related field.
- At least 1 year of experience with the following:

- Demonstrated experience in field collections for both plants and aquatic species.

- Demonstrated knowledge of the Illumina MiSeq and next-generation sequencing.
+
- Experience using R and other software for bioinformatics of high throughput sequence data and data visualization (for example: FASTQC, ggplot2, CLC Genomics Workbench) to tabulate, organize, summarize, and analyze and present genetic or genomic data is required. Experience with Linux and processing genomic sequence data is beneficial but not required.

- Familiarity with issues associated with sampling and extracting a wide variety of samples is preferred.

- Knowledge of issues associated diet studies, invasive aquatic species, honey bees or coral.
- Publication of at least one lead author manuscript is desired as well as experience working within a dynamic, multidisciplinary teams both in the field and in laboratories.
