Thermo Fisher Scientific has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Patent Agent to join its Life Sciences Solutions Group. This position will report to Sample Preparation IP Counsel, supporting the Sample Preparation business, including its nucleic acid purification business.
Principal Activities and Tasks:
- Engage with R&D and product management to sense and capture new innovation;
- Engage with in- and out-licensing functions to facilitate acquisition of and monetization of IP;
- Draft, prosecute and manage worldwide patent portfolios;
- Provide freedom-to-operate, landscape, and competitor analyses, and advise R&D staff regarding design-around activities;
- Facilitate technology transfer agreements;
- Advise and educate internal clients regarding IP-related issues, including new developments in patent and trade secret laws and policies
Qualifications:
- B.S. or advanced degree (preferred) in chemistry, biochemistry, or molecular biology;
- Extensive experience in invention harvesting, patent preparation and prosecution, portfolio development, and prior art and patent searching;
- Registration to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, with six or more years of experience preparing and prosecuting U.S. and international patent applications (writing samples will be requested) in the chemical or biological arts;
- Excellent scientific and technical expertise (hands-on, laboratory experience in the biochemical and chemical arts strongly preferred);
- Experience with trade secret protection;
- Exceptional communication skills, both written and interpersonal, a collaborative instinct, and a high level of initiative;
- Office in Carlsbad, CA; Frederick, MD; or Austin, TX. Travel to other sites in the U.S. may be required.
