Description

Reports to: Groundwater Supervisor

Location: 241 Ralph McGill, Atlanta, GA - GPC Corporate Office.

JOB SUMMARY

Primary responsibilities include working with a team of geologists, engineers, and scientists to implement Georgia Power's groundwater strategy for compliance with the federal and state Coal Combustion Residuals (CCR) Rule. Position will ensure compliance requirements for groundwater and corrective action are met or exceeded and decisions are made with broad understanding of impacts to the company. This position will be responsible for developing, communicating, implementing, and leading groundwater compliance strategies and meeting groundwater compliance obligations for company business units and facilities.

This person will work closely with Southern Company Technical & Project Solutions and third-party environmental consultants to meet CCR Compliance obligations and objectives related to groundwater monitoring and reporting, permitting, site assessment, and corrective action. In addition to CCR compliance, this person is expected to provide input and review on groundwater and remediation issues associated with other regulatory programs (Georgia Hazardous Site's Response Act (HSRA), Brownfields, etc.). This position will be expected to interface with internal customers, regulatory agencies, consultants, and related industry groups.

This position will be filled as a geologist or similar depending on educational background, experience, and qualifications. This position is located in Atlanta, Georgia.

JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Coordinate internal and external, multi-stakeholder reviews and submit compliance documents.
  • Develop external and internal relationships to ensure groundwater and corrective action programs are implemented successfully, well documented, and well communicated.
  • Develop and implement cost-effective, proactive compliance strategies and programs for continued compliance with CCR-related regulations and permits.
  • Monitor environmental regulatory activities that impact company operations.
  • Work with regulatory agencies and external groups to promote informed, balanced and science-based regulations and permit requirements.
  • Develop partnerships with all levels of business units and facilities management to implement efficient and effective environmental programs.
  • Support the Company's environmental policies in all areas, including environmental stewardship initiatives.

JOB REQUIREMENTS & EXPERIENCE
  • Demonstrated knowledge of applicable environmental laws and regulations. Knowledge and experience to implement federal and state CCR regulations, Georgia Solid Waste regulations (specific to landfill groundwater compliance). Additional experience with Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), HSRA, Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Recovery Act (CERCLA) is a plus.
  • Experience in interpreting and implementing groundwater compliance programs consistent with environmental regulations including routine groundwater reporting, permitting, site assessment/conceptual model development, and corrective action.
  • Familiar with groundwater flow modeling, geochemical modeling, and statistical methods.
  • Ability to synthesize technical information and communicate in a manner suitable for technical and non-technical personnel.
  • Ability to work efficiently and effectively with multidisciplinary teams and individually with limited supervision in a high demand environment
  • Ability to work and maintain a flexible schedule, which may include non-traditional hours and travel.
  • Judgment skills necessary to make decisions, solve problems, implement solutions, and inform multiple stakeholders.
  • Project and contract management.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • BS or BA degree in geology, engineering, or related field.
  • Professional registration (PG or PE) preferred or readily attainable.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES
  • Excellent writing, speaking, and presentation skills with ability to effectively communicate with internal and external audiences.
  • Working knowledge of both federal and state regulations for land and water, and their application to site monitoring, permitting, site assessments, and corrective action. Knowledge of federal and/or state CCR rules is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated experience leading cross-functional teams, resolving conflict, and working with others to achieve common goals.
  • Ability to prioritize and perform multiple assignments.
  • Project management skills including planning, scheduling, budgeting, communicating, and contract administration.
  • Proficiency in computing, field data acquisition systems, use and application of environmental software.
