The EPA National Student Services Contract has an immediate opening for a full time Coastal Ecosystem Lab Support position with the Office of Research and Development at the EPA facility in Narragansett, RI.

The Office of Research and Development at the EPA supports high-quality research to improve the scientific basis for decisions on national environmental issues and help EPA achieve its environmental goals. Research is conducted in a broad range of environmental areas by scientists in EPA laboratories and at universities across the country.

What the EPA project is about

Within ORD, the Center for Environmental Measurement & Modeling (CEMM) conducts research to advance EPA's ability to measure and model contaminants in the environment, including research to provide fundamental methods and models needed to implement environmental statutes. The methods and models developed by CEMM are typically applied at the airshed, watershed and ecosystem level. Within CEMM, the Atlantic Coastal Environmental Sciences Division (ACESD) is responsible for coastal watershed, freshwater, estuarine, and coastal ecological research.

How you will apply your skills

As a team member, you assist in field, greenhouse, and laboratory sampling and measurements.

Research and analytical duties:
  • Field collections of water, shellfish, plants, and soils;
  • Setting, calibrating, and monitoring hydrologic and water quality sensors;
  • Greenhouse sampling including water quality and plant measures;
  • Monitoring of shellfish in the field and greenhouse;
  • Measuring chlorophyll levels in water samples;
  • Filtering water samples for nutrient analyses;
  • Assembling, transcribing, collating, and helping to analyze data; and
  • Assembling, transcribing, collating and helping to analyze data collected in the field, greenhouse, and laboratory.

Communications-related responsibilities:
  • Assisting in preparation of reports and presentations; and
  • Interacting with other members of the research team and ACESD

Required Knowledge, Skills, Work Experience, and Education
  • Strong analytic skills and experience with spreadsheets, and databases; and
  • Strong written, oral and electronic communication

Desired Knowledge, Skills, Work Experience, and Education
  • Experience working in wetlands and/or coastal marsh systems.
  • A broad background in science including some combination of courses in ecology; biology, chemistry, geology, hydrology.

Location:This job will be located EPA's facility in Narragansett, RI.

Salary: Selected applicant will become a temporary employee of ORAU and will receive an hourly wage of $23.83 for hours worked.

Hours: Full-time.

Travel: Overnight travel is unlikely.

Expected start date: The position is full time and expected to begin July 2021. The selected applicant will become a temporary employee of ORAU working as a contractor to EPA. The initial project is through May 14, 2022, with up to 3 additional option periods.
