Job Summary

UT Southwestern has an opening for the position of Computational Biologist I in the GN-Lab.

Perform professional work in support of scientific research using technical knowledge of software, software development, networking, and/or hardware in a complex computing environment. Subject matter expert in multiple areas of computing technology, and specific knowledge of molecular biology and genetics. Works collaboratively with Principal Investigator ("PI") to determine the most suitable computational methods and tools to analyze large-scale biological data sets. Prepare reports for presentation or publication. Responsible for assisting PI in meeting the system needs for multiple research projects and/or labs.

Experience/Education

Required:


  • Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field of biological science.

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field of biological science, and two (2) years related research experience in bioinformatics and computational biology.



Job Duties:

The successful candidate for this position will work independently as well as a part of the Green Center Computational Core Facility to:


  • Perform high performance next-generation sequencing (NGS) data analysis pipeline systems, to analyze data in a reliable and timely fashion.

  • Implement data integration methods/algorithms across various NGS sequencing techniques (ChIP-seq, RNA-seq, Hi-C etc).




  • Participate in the brainstorming sessions to seek reliable solutions for complex data analysis related to specialized research methodologies.

  • Familiarity and experience working with various research databases/resources to support research projects.

  • Investigate complex problems involving interesting and sometimes puzzling data.

  • Prepare research reports for presentation sometimes to a broad range of non-computational staff and assist with preparation of manuscripts for publication

  • Perform other duties as assigned.



Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:


  • W Knowledge and experience working on bioinformatics pipelines for processing and interpreting NGS data and/or Mass Spectrometry data.

  • Proficiency in one or more programming and scripting languages (R, Python, Java, Perl or Matlab).

  • Experience with Linux and version control systems such as git or subversion

  • Knowledge about various public and proprietary data repositories (e.g. TCGA, 1000 genomes) and familiarity in handling GWAS, eQTL, SNP data analysis.




  • Excellent teamwork, time management, and organizational skills.
