Novome is building genetically engineered microbial medicines (GEMMs) that perform defined activities in the human gut to treat chronic diseases. We have developed the first platform for controlled colonization of the gut with engineered therapeutic bacteria, and are applying this to multiple disease areas as well as expanding our platform capabilities. We are moving our lead program in secondary hyperoxaluria into Phase 1 clinical trials, and are actively progressing programs in IBS, IBD and Immuno-oncology and other indications.

We are seeking scientists to translate our foundational advances in microbiome engineering into novel therapeutics that address high unmet patient needs. Scientists will be responsible for leading characterization of therapeutic candidates and developing the necessary in vitro cell-based assays and in vivo animal disease models for establishing efficacy and evaluating platform colonization technology. They will design experiments to evaluate sophisticated therapeutic strains in the most relevant conventional and ex-germ-free humanized animal models, with access to support from animal research and strain engineering teams. Scientists will work in a collaborative, transparent environment with other gut microbiota, synthetic biology, disease area and clinical experts to bring new therapeutic bacterial strains from conception to IND filing.

  • Drive translation of bacteria with novel engineered activities from in vitro proof-of-concept through to IND filing
  • Work with scientists across different disciplines to design and set up in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo experiments to support multiple platforms/programs, leveraging molecular assays, mammalian cell culture, and animal models of infection/colonization biology
  • Contribute and develop domain knowledge of therapeutic GEMMs behavior to evaluate colonization biology in relation to host biology and biomarker modulation
  • Work closely with clinical and disease area experts to envision therapeutic strategies and evaluate or troubleshoot in vivo performance

Key Qualifications:
  • PhD in microbiology or virology, molecular/cell biology, immunology, or a related discipline
  • Expertise in host/microbe biology and/or bacterial/viral pathogenesis, including experience utilizing in vitro mammalian cell culture assays and in vivo animal infection/colonization models, is required
  • Proven ability to design mammalian cell culture assays and interpret complex animal data to draw conclusions about host-microbe interactions or disease biology
  • Extensive hands-on mouse or rat experience required; experience with GI infection/colonization models or developing/adapting novel disease models is a plus
  • Familiar with molecular assays: qPCR, electrophoresis, and ELISA; protein purification and immunoprecipitation is a plus
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills
  • Experience with Python, omics data, or anaerobic bacteria a plus
  • Eagerness to work collaboratively on a team of multi-disciplinary experts while adapting to the fast-paced needs of a biotech startup
