Fire Ecology Information Analyst

The Utah Forest Institute at Utah State University is seeking a full-time (or part-time, depending on candidate preference) technical analyst to start during the summer of 2021. Applications will be reviewed starting June 30th, with applications being considered immediately and until the position is filled. The Utah Forest Institute is housed in the S.J. & Jessie E. Quinney College of Natural Resources at Utah State University.

The person hired for this position will serve as the principal fire analyst for the Utah Forest Institute reporting to the Director, Utah Forest Institute.

Primary responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:

• Coordinating the development of a Landsat-derived fire severity dataset for all fires ≥40 ha in the state of Utah
• Training, and supervising part-time undergraduate technicians to assist with this work
• Checking fire analyses for data quality
• Preparing summary statistics and analyses from remote sensing and numeric data
• Updating and maintaining the project website
• Designing and implementing field sampling to calibrate satellite-derived metrics with actual on-the-ground conditions in all Utah forest types

Some travel will be required to train field crews at the beginning of each field season (camping required) and to coordinate with other Institutes and agencies. The Technical Analyst may join the summer field crews as crew leader, but this is not a requirement.

Required Qualifications

• BS in Natural Sciences, Physical Sciences, Math, or Engineering
• Experience with R and ESRI software
• One full summer of field work in ecological research or land management

Preferred Qualifications:

• MS in natural sciences, physical sciences, math, or engineering
• Job experience with R, ESRI, MySQL, Dreamweaver, and cloud services
• Experience with pre-fire and post-fire vegetation and fuels sampling

Employees work indoors and are protected from weather and/or contaminants, but not, necessarily, occasional temperature changes. The employee is regularly required to sit and often uses repetitive hand motions.
