The Biology Programis accepting applications for a full-time Career Service Environmental Specialist III position.

Summary of Duties: Coordinates the Bench Biology Workgroup staff whose primary responsibilities include the preparation and analysis of environmental samples for microbiological, chlorophyll and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and the review, authorization, and interpretive reporting of biological and chemical data produced by FDEP's Laboratory investigations. Such investigations may be related to water quality criteria development, TMDLs, bioassessment tools, analytical method development or other environmental issues. Duties may fluctuate depending on laboratory workload.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Essential) :
  • Knowledge of the terminology, principles and techniques used in biological research, analysis or testing.
  • Knowledge of microbiology, particularly in regard to environmental factors.
  • Knowledge of biological and laboratory QA/QC principals and methods.
  • Ability to collect, record, and analyze scientific data relating to the biological sciences.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to communicate effectively complex technical information, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to coordinate other staff members and organize workload efficiently.
  • Ability to determine work priorities, assign work, and ensure timely completion of multiple concurrent assignments.
  • Ability to review work for accuracy and quality of content.
  • Ability to work at counter height for long stretches of time with periods of frequent movement about the laboratory.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to maintain a valid driver's license and travel.


  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Preferred) :

    13.Skill in performing microbiological, chlorophyll and BOD analysis.

    14.Skill in the use of Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).

    Position Requirements

    • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in one of the biological or natural sciences and one year of professional experience in biological science, environmental protection, or regulation. An official transcript or diploma is required of the selected candidate to confirm qualifications for the position.
    • Valid driver's license and travel.
