Position Overview:

Quaker Environmental Health & Safety Supervisor reports to the Safety Manager and is part of the Operations Division. The Environmental Health & Safety Supervisor works cooperatively with all departments, committees, and employees to promote a safe and secure working environment for Quaker employees and guests.

  • Control, eliminate, and/or prevent occupational disease or injury by application of proper control elimination/substitution, engineering, administrative, or personal protective equipment (PPE), and investigate incidents
  • Develop and implement safety initiatives to reduce or eliminate occupational injuries and violations of federal and state safety regulations, and present training and guidance throughout the facility
  • Review, evaluate, analyze, and audit work environments and behaviors, and develop programs and procedures to control, eliminate, and prevent occupational disease or injury caused by chemical, environmental, physical, and biological agents or ergonomic factors
  • Serve as a liaison with local, county, district, and state regulatory authorities regarding matters relating to Quaker environmental hazards and/or regulatory compliance matters (including, but not limited to DNR, EPA, OSHA); coordinate with Legal in formulating and responding to compliance violation matters

Essential Functions:

  • Assist with plant safety efforts and ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements, including company policy and procedure
  • Develop and conduct safety policies, safety training, and assist with training plan initiatives
  • Conduct annual review of Quaker Safety Manual to assure timely updates and compliance with changing laws and regulations
  • Actively interact with all employees to promote safe work behaviors
  • Anticipate, identify, and evaluate hazardous conditions and practices
  • Implement and administer hazard control methods, understand and apply safety policies and procedures, and promote facility security measures and protocols
  • Conduct incident investigations, identify root causes, and summarize findings into professional written reports
  • Serve as lead investigator for environmental or compliance incidents; conduct professional investigations, determine root cause of incidents, and identify corrective actions
  • Conduct statistical analysis of injury trends and industry safety data (both historical analyses and future projections)
  • Interpret and present statistical data to Operations, Safety, Legal, and Executive teams and committees
  • Conduct safety audits and inspections throughout manufacturing facility
  • Evaluate work processes to identify personal protective equipment (PPE) needs; purchase, stock, and/or distribute PPE as needed
  • Conduct PPE compliance audits throughout manufacturing facility and provide real-time corrective instruction to prevent work-related injuries
  • Support medical team by assisting with occupational injury investigations
  • Serve as lead safety committee member, provide training and leadership to safety committee, host monthly committee meetings, coordinate activities, and empower committee members to develop and obtain specific safety goals and objectives
  • Conduct Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) designed to standardize processes and assist in the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) or One Point Lessons (OPLs) to promote education and communication of said SOPs or OPLs
  • Maintain Safety Data Sheets (SDS) system/manuals
  • Complete and maintain OSHA required documentation, reports, and postings
  • Participate in OSHA site inspections and serve as primary point of contact for OSHA communications
  • Coordinate and manage annual audiograms, industrial hygiene surveys, respirator fit testing, HAZMAT response training, and all other safety compliance requirements
  • Coordinate and manage testing and compliance for all air, water, and SWPP permitting and compliance requirements
  • Serve as primary point of contact and oversee all DNR, EPA, and other governmental compliance matters (local, state, or federal)
  • Manage SDS program and coordinate with Purchasing to assure regulatory compliance
  • Assist with development of lean manufacturing/5S and project management, and other special projects, as requested

  • Ability to conduct professional investigations and prepare thorough written reports
  • Ability to conduct environmental and compliance inspections and complete proper documentation
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to interpret and convert observations into formal recommendations
  • Computer proficiency (MS Office with an emphasis on Excel, email, and social media)
  • Ability to adapt to change and evolving manufacturing environment
  • Ability to operate effectively as part of a team structure
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to interact with diverse workforce
  • Ability to handle confidential information with great sensitivity
  • Ability to work well under pressure, meeting multiple and sometimes conflicting deadlines
  • Must be self-motivated and able to follow instructions with little or no supervision

Preferred Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Compliance, or related field
  • OSHA 10-hour training (OSHA-30 hour preferred)
  • 5 years' safety or environmental sciences experience
  • 2 years' experience implementing safety initiatives and managing environmental compliance in a manufacturing environment

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Consistent and regular attendance is required as an essential job function. These hours are subject to change based upon company needs.

Work Environment:

This position works in a dynamic industrial environment and requires the ability to walk and work in all parts of the production floor and outside during all weather conditions, as necessary to perform the function of the roles.

Physical Demands (POET Moderate):

The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific dexterity abilities required by this job include shoulder mobility and fine motor skills sufficient to operate fork trucks, pallet jacks, and common hand and power tools. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
