Purpose of the Position

The AmeriCorps Member will assist with ongoing stewardship and environmental education programming at NC's oldest land trust. The AmeriCorps Member will assist the HCLT Stewardship Coordinator with conservation easement monitoring, trail maintenance, and invasive species management as well as manage and coordinate trail volunteers. The AmeriCorps Member will also assist with various education and outreach efforts including participate in field based formal and informal natural history hikes at land trust properties, develop and deliver new environmental education program curriculum for our Kids in Nature programs, and help engage the community through social media.

Position Responsibilities and Duties

The AmeriCorps's responsibilities and duties are to: assist and develop education programming in the HCLT Kids in Nature Program; lead formal and informal regularly scheduled hikes on land trust lands; attempt to extend programming to new and culturally diverse audience; produce outreach materials for events, programs and social media; assist with ongoing Stewardship programming including: managing trails, assisting in conservation easement monitoring, coordinating Stewardship volunteers, managing invasive species, and building on efforts of previous AmeriCorps Member.

Qualifications

Versed in or ability to become versed in natural history of the Southern Appalachians. Preferably a bachelor's degree in biology, botany, ecology, environmental science, natural resources, or similar degree. Must be comfortable in the outdoors. Must be comfortable speaking to the public including young children, and leading groups in educational activities. Familiarity or experience in environmental education programming is strongly desired.

Essential Functions / Physical Demands

AmeriCorps Member must be able to safely lead others on hikes and trail building in the mountains of western NC and therefore be in good physical condition. AM must be able to communicate concepts in natural history to others of all ages, in particular young children (ages 5-12). Physically able to assist in stewardship activities including building trail and maintaining trails and assisting in conservation easement monitoring.

Preferred Schedule

Normal HCLT programming is conducted on an M-F 9am to 5pmschedule. We would require the AM to work during those normal operating hours but also like to extend those to weekends up to two times a month for special events or volunteer work days. AM would get compensatory time for weekend time worked. Our greatest need for support is April-November but are flexible in when AM could start. However, COVID has shown that normal sometimes has to be adjusted. We are hoping that by September 2021 we will be moving back into the office but anticipate that we will continue to work from home 1-2 days per week.
