Job Summary

The Electron Microscopy Technician will make fixatives and other chemical solutions according to established protocols; process and embed cells and tissues for transmission electron microscopy; thick and thin sectioning with ultramicrotome; staining of sectioned samples; negative staining; sample preparation for scanning electron microscopy; independent operation of 100kV transmission electron microscope and field emission scanning electron microscope; train users in operation of electron microscopes; maintain complete and accurate computer and written records in support of project management goals.

The successful candidate will interact with customers from a wide variety of backgrounds on a daily basis in a professional and helpful manner and work as a team to optimize workflow. Previous experience in coursework or employment as an Electron Microscopy Technician is preferred.

Experience and Education

Completion of two years of specialized training in Medical Technology area; or completion of two years of college with emphasis in Biology or related field and one year of experience in laboratory work.

Job Duties

  • Obtains and prepares tissues, tissue cultures, and other specimens utilizing techniques of fixation, embedding, sectioning and staining of specimens for microscopic examinations.

  • Operates electron microscope to examine thin sections of specimens for any abnormalities.

  • Screens and evaluates specimens for further observation by principal investigator or other members of professional research or clinical staff.

  • Assumes responsibility for care and minor maintenance of electron microscope used by laboratory personnel by inspecting equipment for malfunction or damage on daily basis.

  • Photographs and develops negatives of tissue using electron microscope for diagnosis, study, and/or publications.

  • Performs other related duties as required.
