JOB REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelor's Degree from a recognized college or university with a major in Environmental Health, Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Environmental Engineering, Physical, Chemical, Natural Sciences or equivalent; OR
  • Bachelor's Degree with thirty (30) college credits in life science, natural science, physical science or health science, AND have passed at least one (1) college math or statistics class; AND
  • A valid State of Michigan Driver's License and an acceptable safe driving record. (INDICATE MICHIGAN DRIVER'S LICENSE NUMBER ON THE FRONT OF APPLICATION.)

SPECIAL CONDITIONS:

Environmentalists will be required to have an automobile for transportation during working hours on a mileage basis reimbursement.

JOB DUTIES:

Environmentalists are employed in the Department of Public Services and the Health, Human and Veterans Services Department. They are expected to recognize general environmental health problems, to explain public health and/or environmental health requirements and to seek corrections and compliance when encountering unsatisfactory environmental health conditions in the following areas: food service sanitation, private water supply and private water disposal, solid waste management, rodent control, soil erosion, sedimentation control, school and institutional sanitation, swimming pool sanitation, storm water management, nuisance complaint investigations and other related areas. Environmentalists also perform assessments of County operations, which are environmentally regulated. Employees will act as technical assistants conducting water quality and other environmental related inspections and tests and complete progress reports for review of higher level staff and prepare correspondence.

TYPES OF TESTS:

A written test (50%) will be administered covering knowledge of environmental health, environmental science and related knowledge. Personal qualifications (50%) interview which may include a written exercise.

Candidates must pass all tests in order to be placed on the eligibility list.
